The good thing about traveling from here to there is that along the way you meet other travelers with the same desire to see beautiful places as you do. Each new person you meet gives you an adventurous spirit, shares anecdotes and experiences with you and, above all, excites you about going to see what lies beyond. This is how, talking with a couple at the campsite we rented in the Colonia Suiza in Bariloche, we reached another point in the province of Río Negro: El Bolsón ❤️.
Lo bueno de ir viajando de aquí a allá es que en el camino conoces a otros viajeros con las mismas ganas de conocer lugares hermosos al igual que vos. Cada persona nueva que conoces te va contagiando el espíritu aventurero, te comparte anécdotas y experiencias y sobre todo, te emociona sobre ir a ver qué cosas hay más allá. Así es como charlando con una pareja en el camping que alquilamos en la Colonia Suiza en Bariloche, llegamos hasta otro punto de la provincia de Río Negro: El Bolsón ❤️.
Of course El Bolsón is nothing new for tourists, in fact it is a very important point for those who vacation in the south of Argentina, but this destination was not in our plans at all. I think my cousin, who was a designated driver at the time, had only planned to go as far as Bariloche, but having passed that couple returning from El Bolsón made me want to go there so we could see what it was all about 😃.
Por supuesto El Bolsón no es nada nuevo para los turistas, de hecho es un punto bastante importante para aquellos que vacacionan en el sur de Argentina, pero este destino no estaba para nada en nuestros planes. Creo que mi primo, quién era conductor designado en ese momento, solo había planeado llegar hasta Bariloche, pero habernos cruzado a esa pareja que regresaba del El Bolsón hizo que quiera ir hasta allí para que veamos de qué se trataba 😀.
Only 140 km separate the Swiss Colony from this city, so that day we set up our camp very early and set off for the road. After almost 10 days in the south, that was the first morning that the rain threatened us a bit: we rushed to take everything down before the tents got wet, but this only lasted about half an hour because by the time we were on our way At our new destination, the water had stopped. Passing clouds, we supposed for our good luck ❤️.
Tan solo 140 km separan la Colonia Suiza desde esta ciudad, así que ese día levantamos nuestro campamento bien temprano y partimos hacia la ruta. Después de casi 10 días en el sur, esa fue la primera mañana en la que la lluvia nos amenazó un poco: nos apuramos a desarmar todo antes de que se mojaran las carpas, pero esto solo duró una media hora porque para cuando estábamos en camino a nuestro nuevo destino, el agua había cesado. Nubes pasajeras, supusimos para nuestra buena suerte ❤️.
Something that happened on the way was that as we were observing the landscape, the tonality of the vegetation began to darken. At first we thought that it would be some rare species of trees with that particular color, but when we got a little closer we noticed that they were burned mountains. There was even the smell of burning in the air. I cannot put into words the anguish generated by seeing this landscape devastated by forest fires: kilometers and kilometers of trees in ashes and barely standing. It is not known if this was accidental or intentional, but in any case there is a very important part that was destroyed and it will surely take years and years to recover. A real pity 😞.
Algo que sucedió en el camino fue que a medida que íbamos observando el paisaje, la tonalidad de la vegetación comenzó a oscurecerse. Primero pensamos que se trataría de alguna rara especie de árboles con ese color en particular, pero cuando nos acercamos un poco más notamos que eran montes quemados. Incluso se sentía el olor a quemado en el aire. No puedo poner en palabras la angustia que me generó ver este paisaje devastado por los incendios forestales: kilómetros y kilómetros de árboles en cenizas y apenas en pie. No se sabe si esto fue accidental o intencional, pero de cualquier modo hay una parte muy importante que se destruyó y seguro tomará años y años recuperar. Una verdadera lástima 😞.
It will have taken around two hours to reach El Bolsón. Although there was no rain there, there were quite a few clouds that obscured the landscape, but when a place is beautiful, the weather doesn't matter. This city is quite large, it is far from being a town and it is located between a mountain range and a river, so there is something for everyone 💛.
Habremos tardado alrededor de dos horas en llegar hasta El Bolsón. Si bien allí no había lluvia, habían bastantes nubes que oscurecían el paisaje, pero cuando un lugar es lindo no interesa el clima. Esta ciudad es bastante grande, está lejos de ser un pueblo y se encuentra ubicada entre un cordón montañoso y un río, por lo que hay para todos los gustos 💛.
As our initial idea was only to spend one night, we looked for accommodation in a hostel so as not to have to set up camp for just one day. We got a very cheap one at only 1100 ARS per person (approx 7USD), a bit far from the center but this did not matter to us because we were by car. Once we settled in, we headed out to explore some more 😃.
Como nuestra idea inicial solo era pasar una noche, buscamos alojamiento en un hostel para no tener que estar armando el campamento por solo un día. Conseguimos uno muy económico a tan solo 1100 ARS por persona (aprox 7USD), algo lejos del centro pero esto no nos importaba porque estabamos en auto. Una vez que nos acomodamos, salimos a recorrer un poco más 😃.
The main square of El Bolsón is the Plaza Pagano. This square has a two-block-long artificial lake and its decoration includes various hand-carved wooden sculptures. There is plenty of green space to sit on the deck but there are also lakeside seats if you prefer to spend the day there. On the lake you could take pedal boat rides and there is also a bridge to cross from one side to the other. In front of this square there are some important gastronomic establishments and at night a fairly large craft fair is set up 😃.
La plaza principal de El Bolsón es la Plaza Pagano. Esta plaza tiene un lago artificial de dos cuadras de largo y su decoración incluye varias esculturas de madera talladas a mano. Hay mucho espacio verde para sentarse en el piso pero también hay asientos a la orilla del lago por si prefieres pasar el día allí. En el lago se podían dar paseos en botes a pedal y también hay un puente para cruzar de un lado a otro. Frente a esta plaza se encuentran algunos locales gastronómicos importantes y a la noche se monta una feria de artesanías bastante grande 😃.

Before going to El Bolsón I had read that this place is closely associated with hippie life. And now that I've been there... my conclusion is that it's a very harmonious place between city life and nature. We did see many artisan travelers who finance their daily lives with their craft work, and I also found the people there to be very cheerful and relaxed. Well, if all that means being a hippie, then yes, El Bolsón is a place for hippies 😅.
Antes de ir al El Bolsón había leído que este lugar está muy asociado a la vida hippie. Y ahora que estuve ahí... mi conclusión es que es un lugar muy armonioso entre la vida de ciudad y la naturaleza. Sí vimos muchos viajeros artesanos que financian su vida diaria con su trabajo artesanal, y también me pareció que la gente de allí era muy alegre y relajada. Bueno, si todo ese significa ser hippie, entonces sí, El Bolsón es un lugar de hippies 😅.
Actually, the center of the city of El Bolsón is at least 2 km long where you can walk, but if you want to rest for a while drinking some good mates, this is an ideal place. It is quite busy, but with so much space there is no crowding and you can get a good view of the mountains from there. I like unplanned things, so having arrived there made me very happy and I was able to cross off a place to visit from my endless list of places to visit. It was really great ❤️.
En realidad el centro de la ciudad de El Bolsón tiene al menos 2 km de extensión en los que puedes pasear, pero si querés descansar un rato tomando unos buenos mates este es un lugar ideal. Es bastante concurrido, pero al haber tanto espacio no hay amontonamiento y puedes obtener una buena vista de las montañas desde allí. Me gustan las cosas no planeadas, así que haber llegado allí me hizo muy feliz y pude tachar un lugar a visitar de mi lista infinita de lugares a visitar. Fue de verdad genial ❤️.
