One of the "bad" things about staying too little in a destination is that you have limited time to choose beautiful days to do what you want to do. That was what happened to my cousin and me during our trip to El Chaltén in the province of Santa Cruz, Argentina: the day we had to do one of the longest walks was not the best in terms of weather, but it was not we had no choice. We were determined that we wanted to get to Laguna Torre, so we started our walk anyway, hoping that the forecast would be a little wrong, but it was not 😅.
Una de las cosas "malas" de quedarse poco en un destino es que estas algo limitado de tiempo como para elegir días lindos para hacer lo que querés hacer. Eso fue lo que nos pasó a mi prima y a mí durante nuestro viaje a El Chaltén en la provincia de Santa Cruz, Argentina: el día que teníamos para hacer una de las caminatas más largas no era de lo mejor en cuanto al clima, pero no teníamos otra opción. Estábamos decididas que queríamos llegar a la Laguna Torre así que emprendimos nuestra caminata igual, esperando que pronóstico se equivocara un poco pero no fue así 😅.
For that day the forecast announced that it would be clear in the town but that it would rain a little in the mountains. In this place you have to pay close attention to this and take into account both forecasts, because later we verified that the difference in climate was true. We started our hike with a beautiful sky with just a few clouds, but after a while everything turned gray and a few drops began to fall. By the time we got to the Mirador del Cerro Torre, the sky was completely covered with clouds and we could hardly see it, but we kept going in the direction of the lagoon anyway 😶.
Para ese día el pronóstico anunciaba que en el pueblo iba a estar despejado pero que llovería un poco en las montañas. En este lugar hay que prestarle mucha atención a esto y tener en cuenta ambos pronósticos, porque después comprobamos que la diferencia de clima era cierta. Empezamos nuestra caminata con un cielo hermoso con solo algunas nubes, pero luego de un rato todo se volvió gris y empezaron a caer algunas gotas. Para cuando llegamos al Mirador del Cerro Torre, el cielo estaba completamente tapado de nubes y casi que no pudimos verlo, pero igual seguimos adelante en dirección hacia la laguna 😶.
To get from the town to Laguna Torre, it takes about 4 hours of walking along a path that is well marked out and is relatively easy. Despite the bad weather, we saw a lot of tourists doing the same as us: it seems that nobody wanted to waste any day of their vacation. This trail is one of the main ones in El Chaltén because from it you can see Cerro Torre up close, the second highest peak of this mountain range, with more than 3100 meters high. As we got closer, the mountain could be seen a little more and that gave us relief, nobody wanted to go all that way to see nothing at all 😅.
Para llegar desde el pueblo hasta la Laguna Torre se necesitan unas 4 horas de caminata por un sendero que está bien delimitado y es relativamente fácil. A pesar del mal clima, vimos un montón de turistas haciendo lo mismo que nosotros: se ve que nadie quería desperdiciar ningún día de sus vacaciones. Este sendero es uno de los principales en El Chaltén porque desde el puede apreciarse de cerca el Cerro Torre, el segundo pico más alto de este cordón montañoso, con más de 3100 metros de altura. A medida que nos íbamos acercando, la montaña se veía un poco más y eso nos daba alivio, nadie quería hacer todo ese camino para no ver nada de nada 😅.

Most of the way from the viewpoint until almost reaching the lagoon it was raining, so I could not take as many photos. In the south of Argentina it is quite cold, that day it was not more than 10°C and all of us were walking under the water. My recollection is that we weren't having as much fun but we were still motivated to complete the challenge of getting to the end of the trail. The only thing I hoped is that I didn't end up with a cold afterwards because I still had a little more time left in the trip 😅.
La mayor parte del camino desde el mirador hasta casi llegar a la laguna estuvo lloviendo, por lo que no pude sacar tantas fotos. En el sur de Argentina hace bastante frío, ese día no hacían más de 10°C y todos nosotros estábamos caminando abajo del agua. Mi recuerdo es que no la estábamos pasando tan bien pero aún seguíamos motivados por completar el desafío de llegar al final del sendero. Lo único que esperaba es no terminar con un resfriado después porque aún me quedaba un poco más de tiempo en el viaje 😅.
And when it seemed that we were about to freeze, after almost 4 hours, we reached the lagoon and literally the worst storm of the whole way, wind included. The wind literally pushed me and the rain almost did not let me open my eyes, it was really terrible but we stayed there for a while anyway. There was nowhere to take refuge, we were out in the open but we still looked for a place to sit and eat our lunch while we laughed at how bad we were having 😂.
Y cuando parecía que estábamos a punto de congelarnos, después de casi 4 horas, llegamos a la laguna y literalmente se largó la peor tormenta de todo el camino, con viento incluído. El viento literalmente me empujaba y la lluvia casi no me dejaba abrir los ojos, fue de verdad terrible pero igual nos quedamos un rato ahí. No había ningún lugar para refugiarse, estábamos a la intemperie pero igual buscamos un lugar para sentarnos y comer nuestro almuerzo mientras nos reíamos de lo mal que la estabamos pasando 😂.
If we had seen this landscape in a better climate, we could have seen Cerro Torre from the front, the glacier on top of it, and the lagoon with the pieces of ice floating, but we saw how little is seen in the images. This lagoon is unmistakable for its large blocks of glacier, some of them even reached the shore and people took photos with them. I think the ecstasy of having arrived despite the horrible weather put you in a good mood, we were all laughing because the wind and the water blew our hair everywhere and we laughed even though inside we were almost frozen. I remember that in front of us there was a man sitting alone drinking mates in the rain, he was very funny, it's never a bad time to have some mates while admiring the landscape 😅.
Si hubiésemos visto este paisaje en un mejor clima, se podría haber observado de frente el Cerro Torre, el glaciar que tiene encima y la laguna con los pedazos de hielo flotando, pero vimos lo poco que se ve en las imágenes. Esta laguna es inconfundible por sus grandes bloques de glaciar, incluso algunos de ellos llegaban a la orilla y la gente se sacaba fotos con ellos. Yo creo que el éxtasis de haber llegado a pesar del clima horrible te ponía de buen humor, todos estábamos riendo porque el viento y el agua nos volaba el pelo para todos lados y nos reíamos aunque por dentro estabamos casi congelados. Me acuerdo que adelante nuestro había un hombre sentado solo tomando mates abajo de la lluvia, era muy gracioso, nunca es un mal momento para tomarse unos mates admirando el paisaje 😅.
If the weather had been better, the landscape would have looked like this. I don't feel completely cheated because at least it's a good anecdote and we did it anyway and we got to the end 😅.
Si el clima hubiese sido mejor, el paisaje tendría que haberse visto así. No me siento del todo estafada porque al menos es una buena anécdota y sea como sea lo hicimos y llegamos hasta el final 😅.

Unfortunately we couldn't stay that long, maybe we only rested for half an hour there and we had to come back. On good weather days there are people who even go into the frozen lagoon, but we were not blessed with such weather. On the way back it was still raining a little, but you could tell that the weather was clearing up and little by little the mountains became more visible 😃.
Lamentablemente no pudimos quedarnos tanto tiempo, quizás solo descansamos una media hora ahí y tuvimos que volvernos. En días de buen clima hay gente que incluso se mete a la laguna congelada, pero no fuimos bendecidos con tal clima. En el camino de vuelta seguía lloviendo un poco, pero se notaba que el clima estaba aclarandose y poco a poco las montañas se iban viendo un poco más 😃.
By the time we reached the viewpoint of the hill again, the mountain was clear in half. This view was much better than the one we had seen on the way there and it wasn't raining so much anymore, so we took our official break there looking at how little the hill could be seen. What I liked the most about this hill is that this great giant is not only admirable from afar: they say that it is one of the most difficult mountains to climb and that many climbers submit to the challenge of climbing it. The ascent takes about six days and the mountain is made of granite and ice, so it represents a great feat for those who manage to master it. There is even documentary where you can see how difficult it is to climb to the top 😃.
Para cuando llegamos nuevamente al mirador del cerro, la montaña estaba despejada por la mitad. Esta vista fue bastante mejor que la que habíamos visto en el camino de ida y ya no llovía tanto, así que nuestro descanso oficial lo hicimos ahí mirando lo poco que se veía del cerro. Lo que más me gustó de este cerro es que este gran gigante no es admirable solo desde lejos: dicen que es una de las montañas más difíciles para escalar y que muchos alpinistas se someten al desafío de subirlo. El ascenso dura unos seis días y la montaña es de granito y hielo, por lo que representa una gran hazaña para aquellos que logran dominarlo. Incluso hay documental en donde se puede ver lo difícil que es subir hasta su cima 😃.
This trekking was the first longest we did during the whole trip: we left at 10 AM and we were back in the town around 7 PM. Of course all this was not free for my legs that walked without stopping, but nothing that painkillers can not calm down afterwards. Despite everything, it was a good experience to challenge yourself to reach these kinds of places, and since the weather was not quite with us that day, now I have an excuse to go again 😃.
Este trekking fue el primero más largo que hicimos durante todo el viaje: salimos a las 10 AM y estuvimos de regreso en el pueblo alrededor de las 7 PM. Por supuesto todo esto no fue gratis para mis piernas que caminaron sin parar, pero nada que unos analgésicos no puedan calmar después. A pesar de todo, fue una buena experiencia desafiarse a si mismo a llegar a este tipo de lugares, y como el clima no nos acompañó del todo ese día, ahora tengo una excusa para volver a ir 😃.
