Before I met my new friend Agos, I used to say that hitchhiking was something I didn't like to do, but after spending so much time with her and her witty banter, I had no choice but to join in. I was glad I did, because together we were able to cover a large part of Los Alerces National Park thanks to this type of transport. This park is huge, and although we did a lot of things on foot, being able to move around in a vehicle was even better. That's how we got to one of the most beautiful and somewhat remote spots: the Green Lagoon and its surroundings, which with its colours made the trip totally worthwhile 😃.
Antes de conocer a mi nueva amiga Agos decía que viajar "haciendo dedo" era algo que no me gustaba hacer, pero después de pasar tanto tiempo con ella y sus ocurrencias, no me quedó otra que unirme a esa modalidad. Me alegré de que así haya sido, porque juntas pudimos recorrer gran parte del Parque Nacional Los Alerces gracias a este tipo de transporte. Este parque es enorme, y a pesar de que hicimos bastante cosas a pie, poder movernos en vehículo fue aún mucho mejor. Así fue como llegamos hasta uno de los puntos más lindos y algo alejados: la Laguna Verde y sus alrededores, que con sus colores hicieron que el paseo valiera totalmente la pena 😃.
Thirty kilometres separated us from our campsite to the Laguna Verde, something that even if we had wanted to walk, we would not have been able to do. If we wanted to visit this place, it was necessary to go by car, so my friend Agos, who was quite used to hitchhiking, arranged a transfer for us. It was April and there weren't as many people walking in the park as in the summer season, but she still managed to get us a ride by talking to the few people who were walking near the Futalaufquen Lake, the one close to our camp 😃.
Treinta eran los kilómetros que nos separaban desde nuestro camping hasta la Laguna Verde, algo que aunque hubiésemos querido hacer caminando, no hubiésemos podido. Si queríamos ir a conocer este lugar, era necesario ir en vehículo, así que mi amiga Agos, quien estaba bastante acostumbrada a hacer dedo, se encargó de conseguirnos un traslado. Era Abril y ya no había tanta gente paseando el el parque como en la época del verano, pero ella igualmente nos consiguió traslado hablando con las pocas personas que estaban paseando cerca del Lago Futalaufquen, aquel cercano a nuestro campamento 😃.
The first to take us in the direction of Lago Verde were a couple of grandparents. They had every intention of going to the lake, but after 18 km of asphalted road, the gravel road began. It only took a few kilometres of shaken vehicle for them to realise that they did not want to go any further for fear of damage. They had already brought us more than half way, but we were still 12 km away from our goal. We had to walk for a while, while several cars passed by ignoring our request for a transfer. We had to be patient, but after an hour, another couple offered us a lift 😃.
Los primeros que nos llevaron en dirección al Lago Verde fueron una pareja de abuelitos. Ellos tenían toda la intención de ir hasta el lago, pero después de 18 km de ruta asfaltada, comenzó el camino de ripio. Solo les tomó unos kilómetros de vehículo sacudido para que se dieran cuenta de que no querían ir más allá por temor de los daños. Ellos ya nos habían acercado hasta más de la mitad del camino, pero aún estábamos 12 km lejos de nuestro objetivo. Nos tocó caminar un poco, mientras varios autos pasaban ignorando nuestro pedido de traslado. Tuvimos que tener paciencia, pero después de una hora, otra pareja se ofreció a llevarnos 😃.
I was not at all used to getting into strangers' cars just for the sake of it, but I really enjoyed the ride. This last couple were also nomadic travellers, so we shared some travel experiences along the way. When we finally arrived at Lago Verde, they went their way and we went ours, more than grateful for the fact that they had brought us there. The weather was beautiful, so I was glad we decided to go to the lake that day 😃.
Yo que no estaba nada acostumbrada a subirme a autos de desconocidos así porque sí, disfruté mucho el traslado. Esta última pareja también eran viajeros nómades, así que compartimos algunas experiencias de viaje en el camino. Cuando finalmente llegamos al Lago Verde, ellos fueron por su lado y nosotras por el nuestro, más que agradecidas por el hecho de que nos hayan acercado a ese lugar. El clima estaba hermoso, así que me alegré de haber decidido ir al lago ese día 😃.
Lago Verde, so called more than obviously because of its colour, is small compared to the giant Lago Futalaufquen and even smaller compared to its neighbour Lago Menéndez. The good thing is that from this point of the lake there is a circular path that allows you to walk around and see the two lakes at the same time. After our car transfer, we took a moment to have our lunch and then set off on the hike with the intention of going all the way around. There were some trails marked as closed, but they didn't look too terrible so they didn't manage to impede our crossing 😅.
El Lago Verde, llamado así más que obviamente por su color, es pequeño, comparado al gigante Lago Futalaufquen y más aún, al su vecino el Lago Menéndez. Lo bueno es que desde ese punto del lago hay un sendero circular que permite pasear al mismo tiempo que se ven los dos lagos. Después de nuestro traslado en auto, nos tomamos un momento para tener nuestro almuerzo y luego emprendimos la caminata con la intención de dar la vuelta completa. Habían algunos senderos marcados como cerrados, pero no se veían tan terribles así que no lograron impedir nuestra travesía 😅.
On our way back we passed some lakeshores with several viewpoints where it was possible to sit and rest. We were also able to reach a beach, leaving Lago Verde and approaching Lago Menéndez. From here it was possible to see the famous Torrecillas Glacier, one of the highest glaciers in the area. There are expeditions that organise trekking to this glacier on top of the mountain, including navigation and then hiking. It must be an amazing experience, but I will do it another time because the cost was more than 250 USD 😅.
En nuestra vuelta pasamos por algunas costas del lago con varios miradores en donde era posible sentarse a descansar. También pudimos llegar hasta una playa, ya saliendo del Lago Verde y acercándonos al Lago Menéndez. Desde ese parte era posible ver el famoso Glaciar Torrecillas, uno de los glaciares elevados de la zona. Hay expediciones que organizan trekking hacia ese glaciar encima de la montaña, incluyendo navegación y luego caminata. Debe ser una experiencia asombrosa, pero que voy a vivir en otra oportunidad porque el costo era de más de 250 USD 😅.
On the way back we also find the pier from where the boats leave to visit the Torrecillas Glacier. This pier was small, but still had incredible views. There are some small boats that leave from here without the need to trek to the glacier, but by the time we got there, we were the only ones there 😅.
Dando la vuelta también nos encontramos con el muelle desde donde parten las embarcaciones para ir a visitar el Glaciar Torrecillas. Este muelle era pequeño, pero igual tenía unas vistas increíbles. Hay algunas pequeñas navegaciones que se realizan desde acá sin necesidad de hacer el trekking al glaciar, pero para la hora que fuimos nosotras, ya éramos las únicas en el lugar 😅.
Almost on the final stretch of the complete round, we come across a path called the Lihuan Solitario. It is a tree more than 300 years old, the oldest tree in the park. At this point we meet people again, as the half of the trail is now open, it receives a few more visitors. From this part of the path we could see the Arrayanes River, with its greenish turquoise colour, characteristic of our Patagonian waters. Even though the sun was going down, the water was still an incredible colour 😃.
Casi en la recta final de la vuelta completa, nos encontramos con un sendero llamado del Lihuan Solitario. Se trata de un árbol de más de 300 años, el árbol más antiguo de este parque. En ese punto nos encontramos con gente nuevamente, ya que al ser la mitad del sendero habilitada, recibe algunos visitantes más. Desde esta parte del camino se podía apreciar el Río Arrayanes, con su color verdoso turquesa, característico de nuestras aguas patagónicas. A pesar de que el sol se estaba yendo, el agua se seguía viendo de un color increíble 😃.
Once the lap is finished, the exit is via the footbridge we entered at the beginning. This footbridge is one of the most famous spots in the park, and it was good that we were able to reach it. It was in my plans to go to the National Park at some point, but having a partner in crime to go with was great fun. I don't think I would have dared to hitchhike on my own, so she arrived just in time to accompany me, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to do it on my own 😅.
Una vez terminada la vuelta, la salida es por la pasarela en la que entramos al principio. Esta pasarela es uno de los puntos más famosos dentro del parque, y fue bueno que hayamos podido llegar hasta ella. Estaba en mis planes ir al Parque Nacional en algún momento, pero haber tenido una compañera de aventuras para ir fue muy divertido. Yo creo que sola no me hubiese animado a viajar a dedo, así que llegó justo para acompañarme, sino no hubiese podido hacerlo sola 😅.
Thirty kilometres one way to Lago Verde in two different cars was a good way to get there, but now we had to arrange a transfer back. It was already after 6 PM and there were not so many people around the park, so we had to walk for a while until we managed to get someone to bring us back to the vicinity of our campsite. And who were the generous ones? None other than the park rangers, who picked us up and told us that they had already seen us walking during our morning walk. Being recognised, that was the good thing about going to the park in the low season 😅.
Treinta kilómetros de ida hasta el Lago Verde en dos autos diferentes fue una buena manera de llegar hasta ahí, pero ahora teníamos que encargarnos de conseguir traslado de regreso. Ya eran más de las 6 PM y no había tanta gente dando vueltas por el parque, por lo que tuvimos que caminar un buen rato hasta que logramos que alguien nos acercara de nuevo hasta las cercanías de nuestro camping. ¿Y quienes fueron los generosos? Nada más y nada menos que los guardaparques, quienes nos levantaron y nos dijeron que ya nos habían visto caminar durante nuestro paseo de la mañana. Ser reconocidas, eso fue lo bueno de ir al parque en la temporada baja 😅.
