If you are travelling to El Bolsón, you cannot miss Piltriquitrón Mountain. This giant massif steals the gaze of all travellers who come to this town to enjoy its beautiful landscapes, and rightly so. No matter what time of the year you go for a walk on it, the ‘Piltri’ never disappoints: during my summer stay I had the opportunity to visit its summit in a long hike that took more than seven hours, but this last winter I wanted to visit it in a relaxed way. This second walk to this mountain was completely different from the first one but just as special, because the afternoon we spent there was unforgettable ❤️.
Si estás de viaje en El Bolsón, no podés dejar de visitar el Cerro Piltriquitrón. Este macizo gigante se roba las miradas de todos los viajeros que llegan a este pueblo a disfrutar de sus hermosos paisajes, y lo hace con razón. Sin importar la época del año en la que vayas a pasear en él, el "Piltri" nunca defrauda: durante mi estadía de verano tuve la oportunidad de visitar su cumbre en una larga caminata que tardó más de siete horas, pero en este último invierno quería visitarlo de manera relajada. Este segundo paseo a esta montaña fue completamente diferente al primero pero igual de especial, porque la tarde que pasamos ahí fue inolvidable ❤️.
Our 21-day motorhome trip was slowly coming to an end, and this was the last day we had to enjoy El Bolsón and its surroundings. Patagonia Argentina in winter is beautiful and I was glad we decided to do this shared trip. Although I had already seen most of the places we visited, being there in the winter season made the trip a different experience. We were not lucky enough to see a heavy snowfall, but we were still able to enjoy the snow accumulated in the mountains ❣️.
Nuestro viaje de 21 días en el motorhome lentamente iba llegando a su fin, y ese fue el último día que tuvimos para disfrutar de El Bolsón y sus alrededores. La Patagonia Argentina en invierno es hermosa y me alegró haber decido hacer ese viaje compartido. Si bien casi todos los lugares que visitamos ya los había visto, estar en ellos en la época invernal volvió el paseo una experiencia diferente. No tuvimos la suerte de ver una nevada muy fuerte, pero igualmente pudimos disfrutar de la nieve acumulada en las montañas ❣️.
I had hiked up the Piltri in the summer, but this time my motorhome tour group and I decided to hire a 4x4 vehicle to take us up to the platform of this mountain. This stretch from the road to the platform is 14 km long and in the middle of July it was full of ice and mud, so going by car was a good decision. This transfer cost us $14 round trip and it only took us half an hour to get to the mountain 💕.
En el verano había subido al Piltri caminando, pero esta vez mi grupo de viaje del motorhome y yo decidimos contratar un vehículo 4x4 que nos acercara hasta la plataforma de esta montaña. Este tramo desde la ruta hasta la plataforma es de 14 km que en pleno julio estaba lleno de hielo y barro, así que ir en auto fue una buena decisión. Este traslado nos costó $14 ida y vuelta y solo tardamos una media hora en llegar hasta la montaña 💕.
After walking a kilometre up a steep climb to the beautiful Carved Forest, we continue our walk until we finally reach the mountain hut. The walk from the forest to the refuge only takes about 45 minutes more, but it is necessary to climb carefully because the mud and snow make the hike a bit more difficult. Ideally we should have had walking poles, but we still made it to the refuge safe and sound 💕.
Después de haber caminado un kilómetro en subida empinada hasta el hermoso Bosque Tallado, continuamos nuestro camino hasta finalmente llegar hasta el refugio de montaña. El camino desde el bosque hasta el refugio solo toma unos 45 minutos más, pero es necesario subir con cuidado porque el barro y la nieve complican un poco la caminata. Lo ideal hubiese sido tener bastones, pero igualmente llegamos al refugio sanos y salvos 💕.
The Refugio Piltriquitrón is the only mountain refuge here, although there are a total of 16 such establishments in El Bolsón. The rest of them are located in the mountain range in front of El Bolsón, and with slightly more demanding treks, making this refuge quite accessible. All in all, it only takes about two hours from the platform that can be reached by vehicle to the refuge, and stopping by for a hot drink, to enjoy the views or to spend the night is well worth it 😃.

My travel friends and I arrived at the refuge around 4 PM but we still took the lunch we had prepared. They also sell food and drinks there, but it is possible to eat your own food without any problems. If you want to spend the night, the cost of an overnight stay in July was 14,000 ARS ($12), a price quite similar to the hostels at the base of town. But not all of them have these beautiful views 😘.
Mis amigos de viaje y yo llegamos al refugio alrededor de las 4 PM pero igualmente tomamos el almuerzo que teníamos preparado. Ahí también venden comida y bebidas, pero es posible consumir tus propios alimentos sin problemas. Si deseas pasar la noche, el costo del pernocte en julio era de 14.000 ARS ($12), un precio bastante similar al de los hostels que se ubican en la base del pueblo. Pero no todos tienen estas hermosas vistas 😘.
When I visited this place in summer, the mountain and the hut looked beautiful, but this time everything was covered with a big white blanket of snow. I love how winter is able to transform places and make them look different. What in December was a big green field with a small waterfall adorning it, was now a big frozen space ideal for playing like children. And of course that's what all of us in the refuge did that day 💕.
Cuando visité este lugar en verano, la montaña y el refugio se veían hermosos, pero esta vez todo estaba cubierto de un gran manto blanco de nieve. Me encanta como el invierno es capaz de transformar los lugares y hacerlos parecer diferentes. Lo que en diciembre era un gran campo verde con una pequeña cascada adornando, ahora era un gran espacio congelado ideal para jugar como niños. Y por supuesto que eso hicimos todos los que estabamos en el refugio ese día 💕.
One thing I loved about this hut was that they offered snow sleds completely free of charge. Usually, these snow devices have a rental fee for a certain period of time, but at Piltriquitron Refuge they were free to use. The last time I had played so much with snow and a sled was on my high school graduation trip 13 years ago, so I was really looking forward to having fun with it. At first I was a bit dizzy because of the height and the rapidity of the falls, but it didn't take me long to get used to the adrenaline of the game ❤️.
Algo que me encantó de este refugio es que ofrecían trineos para nieve completamente gratis. Generalmente, estos dispositivos para nieve tienen un costo de alquiler por un determinado tiempo, pero en el Refugio Piltriquitrón eran de uso libre. La última vez que había jugado tanto con la nieve y un trineo había sido en mi viaje de egresados de escuela secundaria hace 13 años, por lo que tenía muchas ganas de divertirme con él. Al principio me dio un poco de vértigo por la altura y lo rápido de las caídas, pero no tardé en acostumbrarme a la adrenalina del juego ❤️.
Our 4x4 vehicle had dropped us off at 2 PM with the promise to pick us up at 7 PM: at first, this time on the mountain had seemed like quite a lot, but it went by very quickly between the hike, the carved forest and the fun with the sled. We started our descent at the same time as the sun went down, and arrived just in time for our driver to be waiting for us. On the way back we were able to watch the lights of the village come on and get a glimpse of the night view of this beautiful place. We couldn't have asked for more from this day 😃.
Nuestro vehículo 4x4 nos había llevado a las 2 PM con la promesa de ir a buscarnos a las 7 PM: al principio, este tiempo en la montaña me había parecido bastante, pero se pasó muy rápido entre la caminata, el bosque tallado y la diversión con el trineo. Emprendimos nuestra bajada al mismo tiempo que caía el sol, y llegamos justo a tiempo para cuando nuestro chofer nos estaba esperando. En el camino de regreso pudimos ver como se iban encendiendo las luces del pueblo y un poco de la vista nocturna de este hermoso lugar. No podríamos haberle pedido más a este día 😃.
I feel that taking advantage of our last day in the motorhome by going to Piltriquitrón Mountain was a great idea. I was expecting to see a lot of snow on this trip, and so it was at Refugio Frey and also at Piltri. Travelling in the high winter season in the south of Argentina is something that not everyone can do due to the high costs of transport and accommodation, but with the dynamic of ridesharing in a motorhome everything was economical and I was able to do much more than I had thought. Now I have both postcards of this mountain, dry in summer and snowy in winter, and I must say that I loved both equally 💘.
Siento que haber aprovechado nuestro último día de paseo en el motorhome yendo al Cerro Piltriquitrón fue una gran idea. Yo esperaba ver mucha nieve en este viaje, y así fue en el Refugio Frey y también en el Piltri. Viajar en la temporada alta de invierno en el sur de Argentina es algo que no todos pueden hacer debido a los elevados costos de transporte y alojamiento, pero con la dinámica de viaje compartido en motorhome todo fue económico y pude hacer mucho más de lo que había pensado. Ahora tengo las dos postales de esta montaña, seca en verano y nevada en invierno, y debo decir que ambas me encantaron por igual 💘.
