One of the most fun things that could have happened to me during my stay in Esquel was meeting my new friend Agos. She arrived with all her travelling energy that was more than contagious, and together we shared a month full of walks. In one of the many plans she had for us to make together, she thought it was a good idea to go camping in Los Alerces National Park, even though it was not the best time of the year to do so. In the first week of April we were already in autumn in this part of the world and, although the days were still somewhat warm, we knew that the cold at night would not be as friendly. However, we didn't let this deter us and still went to try our luck with their humble but equally functional summer tent 😅.
Una de las cosas más divertidas que me pudo haber ocurrido en mi estadía en Esquel fue haber conocido a mi nueva amiga Agos. Ella llegó con toda su energía viajera que era más que contagiosa, y juntas compartimos un mes lleno de paseos. En uno de los tantos planes que tuvo para que hiciéramos en conjunto se le ocurrió que era buena idea ir a acampar al Parque Nacional Los Alerces, a pesar de que ya no era la mejor época del año para hacerlo. En la primera semana de Abril ya estábamos en otoño en esta parte del mundo y, aunque los días aún estaban algo cálidos, sabíamos que el frío de la noche no sería igual de amigable. Sin embargo, no dejamos que esto nos acobardara e igualmente fuimos a probar suerte con su humilde pero igual funcional carpa de verano 😅.
After arranging our work schedules at the hostel, we both managed to get three days off, so that we could camp two nights in the park. There was a public bus from the Esquel bus terminal that left us at the entrance of the park and taking it was our initial idea. However, due to an error between the high and low season schedules, we got the timetable mixed up and missed the morning service and the next one would only leave mid-afternoon. Luckily, we were not the only ones with this confusion and we found a guy who was also in the same situation, so the three of us shared a taxi to the park 😅.
Después de arreglar nuestros horarios de trabajo en el hostel, ambas logramos tener tres días libres, para poder acampar dos noches en el parque. Desde la terminal de Esquel salía un colectivo público que nos dejaba en la entrada del parque y tomarlo fue nuestra idea inicial. Sin embargo, debido a un error entre los cronogramas de temporada alta y baja, nos confundimos el horario y perdimos el servicio de la mañana y el siguiente recién partiría a media tarde. Por suerte, no fuimos los únicos con esta confusión y encontramos a un chico que también estaba en la misma situación, así que entre los tres compartimos un taxi hasta el parque 😅.
When we arrived at the entrance to the park, we chose to camp at the Los Maitenes campsite, the only free campsite open at that time at the end of April. In fact, this was the last week that the campsite would be open, as hardly anyone was going to camp there anymore due to the low night temperatures. The campsite manager was surprised that we decided to camp on those dates, but those were the dates we had available. We knew that the tent Agos had was not suitable for low temperatures, but we were still equipped with plenty of warm clothes, two blankets from the hotel and our humble but functional sleeping bags 😂.
Cuando llegamos a la entrada del parque, elegimos acampar en el Camping Los Maitenes, el único camping libre abierto en esa fecha de fines de Abril. De hecho, ese era la última semana que el camping permanecería abierto debido a que ya casi nadie iba a acampar debido a las bajas temperaturas nocturnas. El encargado del camping se sorprendió de que decidamos acampar en esas fechas pero es que eran las que teníamos disponibles. Sabíamos que la carpa que Agos tenía no era para bajas temperaturas, pero igualmente fuimos equipadas con mucha ropa abrigada, dos frazadas del hotel y nuestras bolsas de dormir, también humildes pero funcionales 😂.
Los Alerces National Park is really huge and one day alone is not enough to cover it all. I think you should stay at least a week if you want to see everything there is here, but we both said we would do as much as we could during our three day stay. As we arrived early on the first day, after setting up the tent and having breakfast, we set off to explore the surrounding area. Not having a car is also an issue, but at least we had some things to do on foot near the campsite 😃.
El Parque Nacional Los Alerces es realmente enorme y no alcanza un día solo para recorrerlo todo. Creo que al menos habría que quedarse una semana si se quiere ver todo lo que hay por acá, pero ambas dijimos que haríamos lo máximo que pudiéramos durante nuestra estadía de tres días. Como el primer día llegamos temprano, después de armar la carpa y desayunar, salimos a recorrer los alrededores. El hecho de no tener vehículo también es un tema, pero al menos teníamos algunas cosas para hacer a pie cerca del camping 😃.
One of them was a small path marked as easy on the maps, where you could see some cave paintings and ancient drawings on the stones. This trail was short and with plenty of informative signage, ideal to do with children. At the end, you could climb up to a big rock from where you had a good view of the largest lake in the park, Lago Futalaufquen. This blue body of water, in combination with the green and colourful autumn vegetation formed a beautiful landscape. This little trail was well worth a visit and my favourite part of the hike was definitely the view from the top ❤️.
Una de ellas era un pequeño sendero marcado como fácil en los mapas, en donde se podían ver algunas pinturas rupestres y antiguos dibujos en las piedras. Este sendero era corto y con bastante cartelería informativa, ideal para hacer con niños. Al final, se podía subir a una gran roca desde donde había una buena vista del lago más grande del parque, el Lago Futalaufquen. Este cuerpo de agua azul, en combinación con la vegetación verde y colorida del otoño formaban un paisaje hermoso. Valió la pena visitar este senderito y mi parte preferida sin dudas fue la vista superior ❤️.
The second thing we were able to do walking near the campsite was to visit the lakeshore. The particularity of this park is that a large part of the coast is privatised because of the numerous lodgings inside the park, but you can still find some public access to the beach. In any case, like all Patagonian lakes in Argentina, these waters are freezing cold and, even in the middle of summer, swimming in them is an activity for the brave. These postcards were nice to take a walk and enjoy the beautiful scenery ❤️.
La segunda cosa que pudimos hacer caminando cerca del camping fue visitar la costa del lago. La particularidad que tiene este parque es que gran parte de la costa está privatizada por los numerosos alojamientos que hay dentro del parque, pero igual se pueden encontrar algunas bajadas públicas a la playa. De todos modos, como todo lago patagónico de Argentina, estas aguas son heladas y, aún en pleno verano, nadar en ellas es una actividad para valientes. Estas postales eran lindas como para poder pasear un poco y llenarse de estos lindos paisajes ❤️.
After a short walk along the coast, we hitchhiked a ride to the next lake in the park, Lago Verde, which I will share with you tomorrow because I really took a lot of pictures. When we got back, we still wanted to explore some more, so we got off halfway to go to the Yrigoyen Waterfall. This was a small waterfall accessible by a short path with a small slope, but from where you could appreciate it well. It was worth having gone down earlier to see it, in our aim to make the most of the sunlight until the last minute of the day 😃.
Luego de pasear un poco por la costa, hicimos un poco de dedo para llegar hasta el siguiente lago del parque, el Lago Verde, fotos que voy a compartir mañana porque de verdad saqué muchísimas. Cuando volvimos, todavía teníamos ganas de seguir explorando un poco más, así que nos bajamos a mitad de camino para ir a conocer la Cascada Yrigoyen. Este era un pequeño salto de agua al que se accedía por un sendero corto con un pequeño desnivel, pero desde donde se podía apreciar bien. Valió la pena haberse bajado antes para verlo, en nuestro objetivo de aprovechar la luz del sol hasta el último minuto del día 😃.
As the evening approached, the temperature dropped considerably and we knew we were in for a bit of a difficult night, but we still felt well prepared to face it. We both had all our warm clothes with us, plus the blankets we had brought with us. I had already had a traumatic experience of camping in the mountains in the summer and didn't want to be cold again, so I bundled up as much as possible before going to bed. That night the temperature dropped to -8°C according to our phones, but luckily we both got a good night's sleep, as well as seeing one of the most beautiful starry skies of all 😃.
A medida que se fue acercando la noche, la temperatura fue bajando considerablemente y sabíamos que tendríamos una noche un poco difícil, pero igual nos sentíamos bien preparadas como para afrontarla. Ambas teníamos toda nuestra ropa de abrigo con nosotras, además de las frazadas que habíamos llevado. Yo ya había pasado una experiencia traumática de acampar en la montaña en el verano y no quería volver a pasar frío, así que me abrigué lo máximo posible antes de dormir. Esa noche la temperatura bajó hasta -8°C según nuestros teléfonos, pero por suerte, las dos pudimos dormir bien, además de haber visto uno de los cielos estrellados más hermosos de todos 😃.
In the end, I was glad that I accepted this proposal to go camping and that we spent a night without freezing. The experience of being in Los Alerces National Park from early morning until dark was very nice, and it was good that Agos arrived just in time to share her tent with me. This park is a must-see if you are in this part of Chubut province, and if you can't miss it, I recommend everyone to visit it. Besides camping sites, in the summer season there are also glampings, cabins and hosterias, where it is possible to spend a more comfortable stay. But to say that you slept in a tent at -8°C and did not get cold is much more interesting 😅.
Al final, me alegré de haber aceptado esta propuesta de ir a acampar y de que hayamos pasado una noche sin congelarnos. La experiencia de estar el el Parque Nacional Los Alerces desde temprano y hasta que oscureció fue muy linda, y fue bueno que Agos haya llegado justo a tiempo para compartir su carpa conmigo. Este parque es uno de los imperdibles si estás en esta zona de la provincia de Chubut, y si pueden no perdérselo, recomiendo a todos que lo visiten. Además de campings, en este lugar en la temporada de verano también hay glampings, cabañas y hosterias, es las que es posible pasar una estadía más cómoda. Pero decir que dormiste en una carpa a -8°C y no pasaste frío es mucho más interesante 😅.
