SALALAH - OMAN

Salalah_title.jpeg

Salalah is a city in Oman with a rich history dating back to the ancient civilization of the frankincense trade. It was a major center of trade and governance and experienced growth and development in the 19th century with many cultural and architectural landmarks being built. Today, Salalah is a popular tourist destination known for its green landscapes, beaches, cultural heritage, and the famous Khareef Festival. It is a thriving city rich in history and culture.

Visiting Salalah is an adventure, starting with the journey as we drove from Dubai to Salalah which is about 1,200km (745 miles), and there is part of some roads that have only a few petrol stations and mostly after 150-200Km gaps. The highlight of the trip was visiting the old frankincense plantation which was guarded by armed personnel. Toward the end of our stay in Salalah, we visited Rakhyut a very old fishing village near the Yemen border. J. G. Lorimer a British diplomat and historian, described Rakhyut in his "Gazetteer of the Persian Gulf" which was published in 1908. I always remember vividly the feeling of visiting this old fishing village, seeing the mud houses on the coast with the rugged landscape in the background... it's like being transported to the middle age time. Enjoy!
