Back to the Middle Ages - Vrdnik Tower in Serbia

I'm always excited when I visit places that date back to the Middle Ages. I have heard many times about Vrdnik Tower and I have never climbed it before. It is located on Fruška Gora, a mountain in the plains of Vojvodina, the northern province of Serbia.

I often go there with my family because it is close to my city of Belgrade and far enough to be completely different. It's a different environment, people, everything.

On the main road, we came to a sign that said Vrdnik Tower and the road sign pointed in the direction of the forest path. It was impossible to go further by car, so we parked and started walking through the forest.

The nature was amazing and the air very fresh. At first, the climb was not big, but then we started to climb higher and higher.

First we came across a board with all the information about Vrdnik Tower. We read carefully to know what we are going to see.

Halfway through, my daughter got tired, so my husband stayed with her in the forest, and my son and I continued along the path. There were other tourists who headed to this place.

Finally, we climbed to the top and we saw the remains of the walls that once made Vrdnik town that had the purpose of a fortification protecting Fruska Gora.

We climbed the first stairs and looked around the surrounding walls.

On the board at the foot we read that there are remains that prove that the tower was built on the foundations of an ancient Roman fortification and that the present walls and tower date back to 1315.

My son was very curious and wanted us to climb right away. I didn't feel very safe, but we climbed.

It was very high. We enjoyed the views through the openings and windows.

I was afraid that the old structure would collapse, but my son distracted me with his exploring spirit and led me to look into every corner. Medieval fairs were once held at the foot of this fortress. It would be interesting to see what life was like back then.

In its past, the Vrdnik Tower had a defensive role and was built in the medieval military style.

When we were going down, I had the impression that it took quite a long time and I was a little afraid, but my son's enthusiasm did not allow me to be afraid. I am very happy when I can share the experience with my son who is always my best companion! Life is interesting when you travel through time with children. My son's questions always mutually contribute to knowledge. Both mine and his.
