Let's travel together #234 - Having fun on the Bobsled Track from Ghimes (The longest track in Romania)

Keeping alive your inner kid along with the passage of time is, perhaps, amongst the most valuable things someone can be accompanied while going through life. Happily, we managed to find a place where to have lots of fun while chasing our next destination!

During our yearly road trip around Romania, we always focus on outstanding and less known places that we could explore and present them further with the hope that more people will realize how precious Romania's tourism is.
However, this leads to plenty of places seen daily and spending lots of the time on the road going from point A to point B and so on, trying to catch up with more and more locations we want to see in a period of 10-14 days only.
What we often forget to do though, is to enjoy the whole ride to the next stop being caught up with the attention to the GPS and on the notepad with our list of must-see, not looking enough around us and the beauty that is surrounding us.
The road trip from the summer of 2021 was different though, and I'm not talking about the pandemic which was still raising all kind of restrictions here and there, but because we managed to take a break from the whole rush and stop in a place where it doesn't matter what your age number is because you will still have plenty of fun. Guaranteed!

Even though we are talking about a tiny village that you can't find too much about other than that it's part of Harghita county that is mostly populated with both Hungarians and bears, lol (small joke), but also that it belongs historically and culturally to the region of Transylvania.

However, we managed to discover a little bit more than what the internet was offering to us on a quick search, and that's how we found out about a ski slope which got an interesting way to make the tourists return to it even when there is no snow on it. Namely, arranging a 1,300 meters long bobsled track!

Now depending on the region where you are living, this kind of sport might be more or less popular. However, the single place where I've seen this before was during the Winter Olympics on TV or on the internet but which was held on ice and not on rails anyway.

The best part is that the whole thing has no age limit and the price for one ride is quite decent considering that we are talking about the longest bobsled track from Romania that in my opinion has all the reasons to charge more for one ticket.

Prices and schedule

  • Kid Ticket (3-14 years): 15 RON/3.04 EUR per person & per ride;
  • Adult Ticket: 18 RON/3.65 EUR per person & per ride.

The kids between 3-12 years must be supervised by their parents in order to have access to the track, otherwise, admission is forbidden.

The bobsled track is open daily between 9 AM to 9 PM.

Before beginning the ride, you will get instructions on both how to stay so you avoid hurting yourself while taking curves, but also how to control the bob sleigh because there are just two handles that you have to operate simultaneously in order to increase or lower the speed.

In the beginning, crossing 1,300 meters with a bob sleigh seemed like a way too short ride for me but the tiny vehicles are limited to the speed of 45 hm/h to keep yourself safe and also not rush the whole journey which will take you up and down, but also through the underground tunnels and then back to the spectacular landscapes which will fascinate you in no time!

As soon as the journey comes to an end, there is a little screen which will present some pictures taken with each participant during the ride which you can purchase from the same place where you got the visiting tickets.

Personally, we decided not to purchase these ones but we still managed to capture some pictures with our phones during the filled with adrenaline journey we had at SkiGyimes, and I can't wait to exploit this kind of activity in more places of the country because there are quite a few more that can be found here and there but which are not as long as this one was.

The whole complex is located in the village with the same name (Ghimes) on the national road DN12A which makes the connection between Transylvania and Moldova, Miercurea Ciuc being just 30 km away from it.
