Exploring Kampong Glam | A place where traditional architecture and modern street art unite.

Last night, I visited the Kampong Glam area to check out how the traditional architectural buildings of the area have embraced the modern street art of the local Singapore artists. As an #appreciator of art of all genres, I was awed by the superb talent of the artists who made Kampong Glam a place like no other in this city.

It was a wonderful place to explore the traditional designs of the past and the modern artistic styles of the present.

It was a gloomy evening but it didn’t deter me from my goal of finding the interesting and cool street art in the Kampong Glam area. I began my stroll from Victoria Street and found myself wandering around the multiple alleys and corridors between the shophouses. As an architecture appreciator, I’m fascinated by the design of the shophouses even though they were built a long time ago. The ornaments on the facade are reminiscent of the old British shophouses. I’m amazed by the effort of the locality to preserve the structure of the shophouses even though that it is located in one of the most expensive district of the city.

After crossing the street, I found myself immersed in the beauty of the old architecture that are incredibly preserved and are still being used today.

The creativity of the designs seems boundless.

At the first sight of the street art, I was simply staring at it and imagining the hands of the artists stroking the paint on the wall and creating this amazing piece.

From afar, I saw the golden dome of the Sultan Mosque and almost immediately I was attracted to walk close to it and take the first few photos of it. I will have more photos of the mosque as I walk along the alleys of this area.

Along the way, I saw a cat cafe that also followed the trend of street art in this area.

From there, I continued my stroll until I found a narrow corridor where one of the most elaborate street art was made.

I had a hard time positioning myself to find the view as the space was too narrow and there were plenty of obstructions behind me.

Right after I got out of this corridor, I found an alley that led me to find this nice artwork painted on the walls.

From here, I noticed that I circled back to an alley where I could have a view of the mosque. In this alley, there are plenty of Middle-Eastern and Malay restaurants that make this part of Kampong Glam a food haven.

As soon as I exited this alley, I found another one that had a shady-looking narrow entry that brought to these amazing street art series. It seems that this part of Kampong Glam has the most art pieces that cover the whole facade of the small shophouses.

As I stood still, looking at each artwork, I felt the passion and the emotion of the artists while they were creating this awesome street art. The details are incredible and the colors are spot on.

As I continued the stroll, I found the street that I thought was my way out of the multiple alleys of Kampong Glam, however…

These are probably the last street artwork that I could find yet they are probably one of the best.

As I navigated back to the alleys that I thought would lead me to the MRT station, I found another view of the Sultan Mosque and I was amazed at the way the golden dome lined up with the light of the sun in between the clouds.

This view of the mosque concludes my stroll along the colorful alleys and corridors of Kampong Glam. It was a wonderful night exploring the area, I will be back to explore the other areas that I missed out on and also try the food. See you!
