Short walk through Fortaleza de Sagres

What an awesome day today, although I feel a bit tired and sick the last couple of days. Today made my really look forward to the upcoming months because today we had above 20 degree and it felt like a beautiful summer day.

We took advantage of the great weather and went on a little trip. Actually, we only wanted to go eat a pizza in Sagres, but while we were there we immediately explored the fort.

I´ve been surfing at a beach nearby already and standing in front of the fort before but never went in. This time we paid the 3 Euro entry and went in. It is a huge area and it is the only way to get to the most southern tip of this headland in Sagres. I would say it´s worth it and if you´re already there you should go in.

Inside the fort there is a huge round trip walking path along the cliffs. Today there were lots of fisher men and we finally saw one of them catching a fish. usually they just stay there for hours without catching anything. At least that´s my feeling.

The terrain is quite barren and dry but is ideal for taking great pictures.

The views you will get from the edges of the cliff over the beaches and the open ocean are absolutely amazing. There was a bit of haze today that´s why the sky is not that blue like usual.

It´s a nice little walk and just perfect to digest a pizza. It´s also suitable for anyone as there are no steep hills or rocky pathways. Apart from the Lighthouse at the southern tip of the forte there is also the church Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Graça, a building I could not identify but looked cool and a mixture of artwork and labyrinth.

There is a lot of birdlife here in Sagres and especially at that very southern tip. Once every year there is a big bird watching festival were lots of photographers are around. Today we only saw the ordinary seagulls and some smaller singing birds.

The coolest thing was definitely that maze. At first we had no idea what it is until we walked in. Pretty cool and perfect spot to take some photos with these great colours.

I absolutely loved that washed out colour of the one building I could not identify. With the sun behind the building and that turquoise coloured door it looked awesome.

Last but not least, what would be such a huge fort without weapons. These guns are from 1824 and looked a bit rusty. Not sure if you will win a battle with them but they definitely look cool.

So all in all it was a great little walk, also because there are hardly any tourists on site at the moment. I guess this place can get packed during the summer months. At least thats what the car park suggest because it is huge. Check it out yourself if you happen to be around, it´s worth it.
