Hello everyone
Earlier this month, my family and I traveled to Chaiyaphum Province, my hometown to take my oldest son who had reached the age of 21 to do his obligatory military service and his ordination. It is the duty of every Thai who has reached the age of 21 to serve his country and to be ordained for the grace of his parents.
The Chaiyaphum Province is part of the heart of Thailand with a rural lifestyle, it's located 400 kilometers from Bangkok in the north.
I've been away from home and settled in Phuket with my husband for over 10 years. It's been about 3 years since I didn't come back to my hometown because of the coronavirus pandemic. I returned to my hometown this time, everything here remains the same whether it is the way of life of the people in the village.
เมื่อต้นเดือนที่ผ่านมาบัวและครอบครัว ได้เดินทางไปจังหวัดชัยภูมิซึ่งเป็นบ้านเกิดของบัวเอง เพื่อพาลูกชายคนโตที่มีอายุครบ 21 ปี ไปตรวจคัดเลือกทหารและบวช ซึ่งเป็นหน้าที่ของชายไทยทุกคนที่มีอายุครบ 21 ปี ต้องทำหน้าที่รับใช้ชาติ และบวชเพื่อทดแทนพระคุณพ่อแม่
บัวจากบ้านมาตั้งรกรากอยู่ที่ภูเก็ตกับสามีเป็นเวลา 10 กว่าปี ประมาณ 3 ปีแล้วที่บัวไม่ได้กลับมาบ้านเกิดเลย เพราะโควิดระบาด บัวกลับบ้านเกิดครั้งนี้ทุกอย่างที่นี่ก็ยังเหมือนเดิมไม่เปลี่ยนแปลง ไม่ว่าจะเป็นวิถีชีวิตต่างๆ ของคนในชุมชน
Although today technology plays a role in every stage of life there are various facilities but most of the villagers here still steam rice on a charcoal stove using firewood. Every home has a lot of firewood to use for cooking and every home has a gas stove for cooking as well but they only use it during urgent times and don't waste time on kindle.
ถึงแม้ว่าทุกวันนี้เทคโนโลยีจะเข้ามามีบทบาทในทุกช่วงของชีวิต มีสิ่งอำนวยความสะดวกต่างๆ แต่ชาวบ้านที่นี่ส่วนใหญ่ก็ยังนึ่งข้าวด้วยเตาถ่าน โดยใช้ฟืนเป็นเชื้อเพลิง ทุกบ้านจะมีฟืนเก็บไว้เป็นจำนวนมากเพื่อใช้ทำอาหาร และทุกบ้านก็มีเตาแก๊สเพื่อสำหรับทำอาหารเช่นกัน แต่พวกเขาจะใช้เฉพาะเวลาที่เร่งด่วน ไม่ต้องมาเสียเวลาก่อไฟ
In the vacant area of the house, various vegetable gardens are planted. For household consumption such as cucumbers, lettuce, scallions, cilantro, etc., these vegetables do not cost money to buy at all. Grown by myself, certified 100% non-toxic.
บริเวณพื้นที่ว่างของบ้านก็จะปลูกผักสวนครัวต่างๆ ไว้สำหรับบริโภคภายในครัวเรือน เช่น แตงกวา ผักกาด ต้นหอม ผักชี และอื่นๆ ผักพวกนี้ไม่ต้องเสียเงินซื้อเลย ปลูกเองรับรองปลอดสารพิษ 100%
Most of the villagers here are farming and will divide some areas to dig fish ponds for consumption and sale as well. There are many species of fish that are raised in the same pond which is a popular fish consumed by the villagers.
ชาวบ้านที่นี่ส่วนใหญ่ประกอบอาชีพทำนา และจะแบ่งพื้นที่บางส่วนขุดบ่อเลี้ยงปลาไว้สำหรับบริโภคและขายด้วย ปลาที่เลี้ยงก็มีหลากหลายสายพันธุ์เลี้ยงรวมอยู่ในบ่อดียวกัน ซึ่งเป็นปลาที่เป็นที่นิยมบริโภคคนในหมู่บ้าน
In the atmosphere in the paddy field in the evening, there is a wind blowing so the air is not hot. The rice leaves swayed in the wind it's an atmosphere that's hard to find in the capital. I really like this atmosphere the green color of the rice leaves makes me feel refreshed.
บรรยากาศที่ท้องทุ่งนายามเย็นๆ มีลมพัดทำให้อากาศไม่ร้อน ใบข้าวก็พลิ้วไหวไปตามแรงรม เป็นบรรยากาศที่หาได้ยากในเมืองหลวง ฉันชอบบรรยากาศแบบนี้มากๆ สีเขียวของใบข้าวทำให้รู้สึกสดชื่น
And another occupation that villagers do during the dry season or do it during their free time from farming. That is to raise silkworms to get silk fibers to sell or weave. Villagers are popular to raise silkworms under the house because the air is well ventilated and spreading mosquito nets prevents various insects to harm the silkworms.
และอีกหนึ่งอาชีพที่ชาวบ้านทำในช่วงฤดูแล้ง หรือทำในช่วงที่ว่างจากการทำนา นั่นก็คือการเลี้ยงตัวหนอนไหมเพื่อเอาเส้นใยไหมเพื่อนำไปขายหรือทอผ้า ชาวบ้านจะนิยมเลี้ยงตัวหนอนไหมไว้ใต้ถุนบ้าน เพราะอากาศถ่ายเทได้ดี และกางมุ้งเพื่อป้องกันแมลงต่างๆ ที่จะเข้าไปทำอันตรายต่อตัวหนอนไหม
The silkworms eat the mulberry leaves 3 times a day, in the morning, noon and evening. This is a mulberry leaf that is used to feed silkworms that are grown in almost every home. If the mulberry leaf that is planted is not enough, can request to collect the mulberry leaves from neighbors. The people here are sympathetic and in mulberry, silkworms can convert proteins into fibers better than those fed by other plants.
Which my mother planted as well because, in the past, my mother raised silkworms and weaved cloth. But now my mother hasn't raised them for almost 2 years because she has to take care of her grandchildren which the younger is now 2 years old. Therefore, the neighbors who raised the silkworms can collect the mulberry leaves. The neighbors will pay back by removing weeds that have inserted the mulberry tree.
ตัวหนอนไหมจะกินใบหม่อนวันละ 3 ครั้ง คือช่วงเช้า เที่ยง และเย็น เมื่อถึงเวลาที่ตัวหนอนไหมจะกินอาหารก็นำใบหม่อนมาวางไว้บนตัวหนอนไหมแล้วพวกมันจะค่อยๆ กันกัดกินใบหม่อนเป็นอาหาร นี่คือใบหม่อนที่นำมาเลี้ยงตัวหนอนไหมซึ่งมีปลูกเกือบทุกบ้าน ถ้าใบหม่อนที่ปลูกเองไม่พอสามารถไปขอเก็บใบหม่อนจากเพื่อนบ้านได้ เพราะคนที่นี่เอื้อเฟื้อกัน และใบหม่อนนั้นตัวหนอนไหมสามารถเปลี่ยนโปรตีนให้กลายเป็นเส้นใยได้ดีกว่าการเลี้ยงด้วยพืชชนิดอื่นๆ ที่บ้านแม่ก็ปลูกเหมือนกัน เพราะเมื่อก่อนแม่เลี้ยงตัวหนอนไหม และทอผ้าด้วย แต่ตอนนี้แม่ไม่ได้เลี้ยงประมาณเกือบจะ 2 ปีแล้ว เพราะต้องไปเลี้ยงหลาน ซึ่งตอนนี้มีอายุจะครบสองขวบแล้ว จึงให้เพื่อนบ้านที่เลี้ยงตัวหนอนไหมมาเก็บใบหม่อนได้ โดยเพื่อนบ้านก็จะตอบแทนด้วยการถอนวัชพืชที่ขึ้นแทรกต้นหม่อนให้
The silkworm rearing takes about 30-35 days. In the last stage, the silkworms will spray yellow silkworms to wrap themselves. At this stage, the yellow cocoon will be boiled to remove the silk fibers from the cocoon.
การเลี้ยงตัวหนอนไหมใช้เวลาประมาณ 30-35 วัน ระยะสุดท้ายตัวหนอนไหมจะพ่นไยไหมสีเหลืองออกมาห่อหุ้มตัวเอง ระยะนี้ก็จะนำรังไหมสีเหลืองไปทำการต้มเพื่อนำเส้นใยไหมออกจากรัง
Silk making is the process of boiling yellow cocoons in hot water. Then pull the silk from the cocoon. Villagers raising silkworms are popular with young silkworms in the early morning.
การสาวไหม คือการนำรังไหมสีเหลืองมาต้มในน้ำร้อน แล้วทำการดึงเส้นไหมออกจากรังไหม ชาวบ้านที่เลี้ยงหนอนไหมนิยมสาวไหมตั้งแต่เช้าตรู่
When the cocoon is boiled with heat, it will gradually loosen the silk threads into beautiful golden yellow lines.
เมื่อรังไหมโดนต้มด้วยความร้อนจะค่อยๆ คลายเส้นไหมออกมาเป็นเส้นสีเหลืองทองอร่ามสวยงาม
The yellow cocoons silk making was removed almost all the silkworms had turned white and the silkworms could be seen inside the cocoons.
รังไหมสีเหลืองที่สาวเอาเส้นไหมออกเกือบหมด จะกลายเป็นสีขาวและเห็นตัวหนอนไหมอยู่ภายในรัง
The silkworms in the nest are boiled until cooked and can be eaten. I like to eat so much every time I go back to visit my mom. Mom will buy it and wait for me to eat. Here, worms are boiled and sold for 100 baht per kilogram, this is another way to generate income for the villagers.
ตัวหนอนไหมที่อยู่ในรังนั้นโดนต้มจนสุกสามารกินได้ บัวชอบกินมากทุกครั้งที่กลับไปเยี่ยมแม่ แม่จะหาซื้อมาไว้รอให้เลย ที่นี่ตัวหนอนไหนที่ต้มแล้วขายราคากิโลกรัมละ 100 บาท เป็นการสร้างรายได้ให้กับชาวบ้านอีกทางหนึ่ง
Around the beginning of April every year it is another important day for Thai men who have reached the age of 21, it's to prepare to go into the obligatory military service. That day will be the day that Thai men who have turned 21 years old are very exciting because if caught with a red card, they have to serve in the military for up to 2 years, but if caught with a black card, they don't have to be a soldier.
The parents and relatives were all excited as well but my son voluntarily became a soldier. So I wasn't in that thrilling atmosphere. Voluntarily enlisting in the military does not require 2 years of training, only 6 months of training, and one can choose a training facility as well.
ประมาณต้นเดือนเมษายนของทุกปี เป็นอีกหนึ่งวันสำคัญสำหรับชายไทยที่มีอายุครบ 21 ปี ต้องไปทำการคัดเลือกทหาร ซึ่งวันนั้นจะเป็นวันที่ชายไทยที่มีอายุครบ 21 ปี นั้นลุ้นระทึกมากๆ เพราะถ้าจับได้ใบแดงคือต้องไปเป็นทหารรับใช้ชาติถึง 2 ปี แต่ถ้าจับได้ใบดำไม่ต้องเป็นทหาร ทำให้ผู้พ่อแม่หรือญาติๆ ที่มาให้กำลังใจต่างก็ลุ้นระทึกไปด้วย แต่ลูกชายบัวสมัครใจจะเป็นทหารเอง บัวก็เลยไม่ได้อยู่ในบรรยากาศแห่งการลุ้นระทึกนั้น การสมัครใจเป็นทหารนั้นไม่ต้องฝึกนานถึง 2 ปี ฝึกเพียงแค่ 6 เดือน และสามารถเลือกสถานฝึกที่ได้อีกด้วย
After my son applies to enlist in the military the next morning, the ceremony of ordination to become a Buddhist monk started by shaving his head.
The ordination to become a Buddhist monk for minimum 7 days of Thai men at the age of 21 is considered a substitute for the grace of parents.
หลังจากที่ลูกชายฉันเข้ารับการสมัครทหารเรียบร้อยแล้ว เช้าวันรุ่งขึ้นก็ทำพิธีโกนหัวเพื่อทำพิธีบวช การบวชของชายไทยเมื่อมีอายุครบ 21 ปี ถือเป็นการทดแทนพระคุณพ่อแม่
After shaving his head he made a ceremony to apologize to his parents and relatives who had done bad things to each other.
Then wear a white dress called "purity clothers of the ordination ceremony" to perform the wrist-binding ceremony and the Brahmins who performed the ceremony would speak of the merits of their biological parents. Before raising one child until he grows up, he has to sacrifice a lot to remember and recognize the merit of the parents.

Around 3 pm, in the afternoon, there is a parade around the church 3 times that go up to the ceremony to receive the monks inside the pagoda. This sacred pagoda does not allow women to enter after receiving the monk's ceremony, changing the yellow robes and chanting prayers for the monks.
ประมาณบ่าย 3 โมง ก็มีการแห่นาครอบโบสถ์ 3 รอบ และขึ้นไปทำพิธีรับพระภายในโบสถ์ ซึ่งภายในโบสถ์อันศักดิ์นี้ไม่อนุญาตให้ผู้หญิงเข้าไปภายใน เมื่อทำพิธีรับพระแล้วก็เปลี่ยนเครื่องนุ่มห่มเป็นสีเหลือง และกล่าวบทสวดเพื่อให้พระสงฆ์ทั้งหลายที่ทำพิธีอยู่ภายในโบสถ์ยอมรับ
Who performed the ceremony inside the pagoda to alms flowers. Then walked out and alms flowers to those who attended the event. Giving alms means sacrificing wealth without expecting anything in return then the ceremony was finished.
จากนั้นก็เดินออกมาโปรยทานให้กับผู้ที่มาร่วมงาน การโปรยทานหมายถึงการเสียสละทรัพย์สมบัติโดยไม่หวังผลสิ่งใดตอบแทน จากนั้นก็เป็นอันเสร็จพิธี
This is the monk's cloister for sleeping which is a small cubicle at the back of the temple. Inside, there are only mosquito nets and mattresses and things that are necessary for survival.
It is by leaving him at the temple with the monks for 15 days before he leaves to do his obligatory military service that we left my native village to take the road back to Phuket with a heavy heart and one person less in the car.
