El Archipiélago de Los Roques
Hoy vengo con mucha emoción a contarles sobre uno de los destinos más espectaculares del Mar Caribe. “Los Roques” este archipiélago se encuentra en las aguas del Mar Caribe venezolano, es un paraíso, todo un lujo, un sueño, que hace algunos años pude disfrutar y espero volver a hacerlo.
Pero no quiero esperar que ese momento llegue de nuevo para ofrecerles la majestuosidad de sus aguas turquesas que bañan las costas de nuestra tierra firme, islas, islotes y cayos; en este caso se trata de islotes y cayos de arenas cálidas de diferentes colores y texturas, generosamente esparcidas en nuestras playas; en Los Roques es la más blanca arena que podamos encontrar, un cielo despejado y un sol resplandeciente, que brilla todos los días del año, así como la amabilidad de los venezolanos, esto es solo parte de lo que encontramos en este destino de sol y playa que ofrece Venezuela.
Nos ubicamos en un lugar cerca de las costas venezolanas, aproximadamente a media hora en avioneta desde el Aeropuerto Internacional de Maiquetía en medio del mar Caribe, se trata de un Parque Nacional, un lugar paradisíaco, conformado por una serie de aproximadamente 50 islotes y cayos, con arenas blancas y aguas cristalinas y suaves, dado que el parque está rodeado de arrecifes de coral que lo protegen del fuerte oleaje; y por ese motivo es un lugar ideal para vacacionar y descansar.
El origen de su blanca arena se explica porque ésta realmente está compuesta mayoritariamente de excrementos de pez loro, un pez cuyo hábitat natural son las aguas de estos arrecifes, se encuentra en abundancia y cuando científicos han estudiado la composición de esta arena se han dado cuenta que realmente no es arena normal si no un compuesto donde el excremento de estos peces es lo que predomina.
Today I come with great excitement to tell you about one of the most spectacular destinations in the Caribbean Sea. "Los Roques" this archipelago is located in the waters of the Venezuelan Caribbean Sea, is a paradise, a luxury, a dream, that some years ago I could enjoy and I hope to do it again.
But I do not want to wait for that moment to come again to offer you the majesty of its turquoise waters that bathe the coasts of our mainland, islands, islets, and keys; in this case, we are talking about islets and keys of warm sands of different colors and textures, generously scattered on our beaches; In Los Roques is the whitest sand we can find, a clear sky and a shining sun that shines every day of the year, as well as the kindness of the Venezuelan people, this is just part of what we find in this sun and beach destination that Venezuela offers.
We are located in a place near the Venezuelan coast, approximately half an hour by plane from the International Airport of Maiquetía in the middle of the Caribbean Sea, it is a National Park, a paradisiacal place, formed by a series of approximately 50 islets and keys, with white sands and crystal clear and soft waters, since the park is surrounded by coral reefs that protect it from the strong waves; and for that reason, it is an ideal place to vacation and rest.
The origin of its white sand is explained because it is actually composed mostly of parrotfish excrement, a fish whose natural habitat is the waters of these reefs, it is found in abundance, and when scientists have studied the composition of this sand they have realized that it is not really normal sand but a compound where the excrement of these fish is what predominates.
El color de sus aguas es inexplicablemente hermoso, a cualquier hora del día pude observar colores mágicos y relucientes en variaciones de azul turquesa. Ahora quiero señalar un punto que me encanta, me complace decir por experiencia propia que la temperatura del agua es deliciosamente cálida, podrías bañarte en la playa en horas de la noche y disfrutar de una agradable temperatura.
El aire es supremamente limpio y debo decir y advertir que el sol en su fulgor es inclemente porque al reflejarse en la blanca arena los efectos de sus rayos se multiplican y si no contamos con la adecuada y exagerada protección que esto amerita podemos sufrir quemaduras muy peligrosas en la piel, es lo único que advierto como punto de cuidado para que el disfrute no se vea opacado bajo ninguna circunstancia por los peligros del sol.
El archipiélago se compone de un ecosistema muy frágil, por eso este es protegido por la nación y su territorio conforma un Parque Nacional, la vegetación de la zona es escasa, de características xerófilas y semi desérticas, los animales terrestres propios que podemos ver se limitan a insectos y reptiles, pero la cantidad de aves acuáticas y pesqueras que observamos es muy abundante y hermosa y esto se debe a la gran riqueza de fauna marina que habita debajo de la superficie.
The color of its waters is inexplicably beautiful, at any time of the day I could observe magical and shimmering colors in variations of turquoise blue. Now I want to point out a point that I love, I am pleased to say from my own experience that the water temperature is deliciously warm, you could bathe on the beach in the evening hours and enjoy a pleasant temperature.
The air is supremely clean and I must say and warn that the sun in its glare is inclement because when reflected in the white sand the effects of its rays are multiplied and if we do not have adequate and exaggerated protection that this deserves we can suffer very dangerous burns on the skin, is the only thing I warn as a point of care so that the enjoyment is not overshadowed under any circumstances by the dangers of the sun.
The archipelago is composed of a very fragile ecosystem, that is why it is protected by the nation and its territory forms a National Park, the vegetation of the area is scarce, xerophilous and semi-desert characteristics, the land animals that we can see are limited to insects and reptiles, but the amount of aquatic and fishing birds that we observe is very abundant and beautiful and this is due to the great wealth of marine fauna that lives below the surface.
Los visitantes del lugar también acostumbran practicar deportes subacuáticos y acuáticos, en nuestro caso solo nos atrevimos a divertirnos un rato en kayak en las tranquilas aguas.
Esto significa que no solo disfrutamos un excelente, lujoso y paradisiaco día de playa, si no que además podemos aventurarnos a sumergirnos en estas ricas aguas a practicar snorkel y buceo, no necesitamos ser profesionales ni aficionados del buceo para esto ya que en el pueblo del “Gran Roque” existen escuelas que brindan sus servicios para instruirnos y guiarnos en la aventura subacuática y alquilan los equipos necesarios como trajes, tanques de oxígeno y caretas.
Es una experiencia que recomiendo completamente porque podemos ser poseedores de una óptica completa de todos los hábitats que conforma este lugar.
Visitors to the place are also used to practice underwater and water sports, in our case we only dared to have some fun kayaking in the calm waters.
This means that we not only enjoyed an excellent, luxurious, and paradisiacal day at the beach, but we can also venture into these rich waters to snorkel and dive, we do not need to be professionals or diving enthusiasts for this because in the town of "Gran Roque" there are schools that provide their services to instruct and guide us in the underwater adventure and rent the necessary equipment such as suits, oxygen tanks, and masks.
It is an experience that I highly recommend because we can get a complete view of all the habitats that make up this place.
Las únicas formas de llegar a Los Roques son en avioneta, contando con vuelos nacionales desde Maiquetía y en el estado La Guaira en la costa del centro del país, a una hora de la capital Caracas, o desde la ciudad de Porlamar ubicada en la isla de Margarita al oriente del país. La otra forma de llegar es vía marítima en Yates, lanchas de gran potencia y los buques de servicio o de la Armada Venezolana.
Para que podamos imaginar, la llegada se produce en el “Gran Roque”, el islote más grande y donde vive el 98% de la pequeña población. El “Gran Roque” es un pueblo tranquilo con calles de arena, pero cuenta con un servicio turístico de posadas bien desarrollado, pero al estilo conservacionista que espero que siempre prevalezca en este lugar.
En medio del “Gran Roque” hay un faro y es un bonito paseo subir para esperar el atardecer y observar este espectáculo de colores desde la mayor altura del lugar.
Es un sitio donde espero que nunca se desarrollen grandes cadenas hoteleras ni resorts para que el desarrollo se mantenga bien controlado y planificado dando prioridad a la conservación de su medio ambiente y no al desarrollo económico, o bien, encontrar la formula perfecta para que el desarrollo económico vaya de la mano con la conservación perfecta del ecosistema, todo por el bien de sus pobladores y de todos los que amamos disfrutar de sus encantos.
En el “Gran Roque” podemos bañarnos en la playa y hacer todo lo que les he contado y es muy hermoso, pero esto no se queda aquí y cada día de la estadía podemos escoger pasear en lancha a un islote o cayo diferente, harían falta un par de meses para conocerlos todos, en nuestro caso pudimos conocer los mas comunes que son Madrizqui y Francisqui, en uno de estos hay una piscina natural especial para practicar snorkel.
The only ways to get to Los Roques are by plane, with domestic flights from Maiquetia and La Guaira state on the central coast of the country, an hour from the capital Caracas, or from the city of Porlamar located on the island of Margarita in the east of the country. The other way to get there is by the sea in Yachts, high-powered boats and service vessels, or the Venezuelan Navy.
As we can imagine, the arrival is at the "Gran Roque", the largest islet and where 98% of the small population lives. The "Gran Roque" is a quiet village with sandy streets, but has a well-developed tourist service of inns, but in the conservationist style that I hope will always prevail in this place.
In the middle of the "Gran Roque" there is a lighthouse and it is a nice walk up to wait for the sunset and watch this spectacle of colors from the highest altitude of the place.
It is a place where I hope that large hotel chains and resorts are never developed so that the development remains well controlled and planned giving priority to the conservation of the environment and not to economic development, or, find the perfect formula for economic development goes hand in hand with the perfect conservation of the ecosystem, all for the sake of its inhabitants and all of us who love to enjoy its charms.
In the "Gran Roque," we can swim on the beach and do everything I have told you and it is very beautiful, but this does not stop here and every day of the stay we can choose to take a boat ride to a different islet or key, it would take a couple of months to know them all, in our case we were able to know the most common which are Madrisqui and Francisqui, in one of these there is a special natural pool for snorkeling.
Algo que debo resaltar de los servicios turísticos de Los Roques es que la gastronomía que ofrecen las posadas es exquisita, de primera calidad, muy esmerada y por supuesto basada en las riquezas culinarias del mar.
Los turistas que generalmente frecuentan vacacionar en Los Roques son en su mayoría Italianos, Portugueses, Franceses, Brasileros y Rusos que en sus viajes no pueden dejar de conocer este lugar y también el Parque Nacional Canaima, que es otra experiencia totalmente diferente.
La primera vez que conocí “Los Roques” nos llevaron mis padres y fueron unas vacaciones inolvidables, en la segunda oportunidad quise tener esta experiencia con mi esposo, y nos escapamos los dos para la fecha de nuestro aniversario, y siempre hemos quedado con las ganas de llevar a nuestros hijos y espero que pronto podamos ir todos juntos.
Something that I must emphasize about the tourist services in Los Roques is that the gastronomy offered by the inns is exquisite, of first quality, very careful and of course, based on the culinary richness of the sea.
The tourists who generally vacation in Los Roques are mostly Italians, Portuguese, French, Brazilians, and Russians who cannot miss this place and also the Canaima National Park, which is a totally different experience.
The first time I visited "Los Roques" my parents took us and it was an unforgettable vacation, the second time I wanted to have this experience with my husband, and we both escaped for our anniversary date, and we have always wanted to take our children and I hope that soon we can all go together.
Para los que vivimos en Venezuela es posible planear este viaje como un full day, y en el mismo día ir y regresar, en nuestro caso decidimos visitarlo por 4 días y 3 noches y nuestro hospedaje fue en la posada Acquamarina y la recomiendo totalmente porque los van a tratar con gran esmero para hacerlos sentir especiales.
Hablando de gastos, “Los Roques” es lo más costoso que podemos encontrar en el país, pero si lo tuyo es la naturaleza, la conservación, lo diferente y sobre todo la tranquilidad y exclusividad, vale la pena vivirlo.
Tal vez llevará años para nosotros volver, pero me lo voy a proponer y les contaré como estuvo.

For those who live in Venezuela it is possible to plan this trip as a full day, and on the same day go and return, in our case, we decided to visit for 4 days and 3 nights and our accommodation was at the Acquamarina Inn and I totally recommend it because they will treat you with great care to make you feel special.
Speaking of expenses, "Los Roques" is the most expensive thing we can find in the country, but if your thing is nature, conservation, the difference, and above all the tranquility and exclusivity, it is worth living it.
Maybe it will take years for us to go back, but I am going to propose it and I will tell you how it was.
