How to Reach Los Roques on a Budget: Insider Tips for Adventurers

Getting to Los Roques is not impossible, there is a way to get to the archipelago that many tourists do not know and this way is the one used by the locals, the inhabitants of the archipelago and also the workers who work in Gran Roque.

Greetings to all hivers who love adventure, in this post I tell you how you can get to Los Roques without running out of budget. Just as my friends, my husband and I did once we decided to get to the most beautiful coastal landscape that our country has without money stopping us.

I think that Los Roques is a true paradise for sea lovers and for those who enjoy the contact with nature in an advanced state of conservation. I have found the greatest richness under the sea, in the protected coral shallows inside the archipelago, I would like to spend most of my time underwater.

However its landscape out of the water is also beautiful, it is my delight, I have never seen a sea color so captivating, well, actually we have different colors of sea, because the variation of the seabed makes the light reflect different shades between greens and blues.

Llegar a Los Roques no es imposible, hay una forma de llegar hasta el archipielago que muchos turistas no conocen y este medio es el que utilizan los roqueños, los habitantes del archipielago y también los trabajadores que se desempeñan en el Gran Roque.

Saludos a todos hivers que adoran la aventura, en este post les cuento cómo pueden llegar a Los Roques sin quedarse sin presupuesto. Así como lo hicimos mis amigos, mi esposo y yo en una oportunidad que decidimos llegar hasta el paisaje costero mas hermoso que tiene nuestro país sin que el dinero nos detuviera.

Yo pienso que Los Roques son un verdadero paraiso para los amantes del mar y para quienes gozan del contacto con la naturaleza en estado de conservación avanzado, La mayor riqueza la he encontrado bajo el mar, en los bajos coralinos protegidos dentro del archipiélago, me gustaría pasarme la mayor parte del tiempo bajo el agua.

Sin embargo su paisaje fuera del agua también es hermoso, es mi deleite, nunca he visto un color de mar tan cautivador, bueno, realmente tenemos diferentes colores de mar, porque la variación del fondo marino hace que la luz refleje diferentes tonos entre verdes y azules.

The town of Gran Roque, the largest island of the archipelago, is a small town of about 6 streets without pavement, sandy beach streets, you can walk barefoot everywhere.

Right on Gran Roque, you will find the airport, a small airstrip that receives tourist flights in small planes or small aircrafts. Getting to Los Roques is so expensive that the reality is that those who frequent it are foreign tourists, most of whom are not even from the American continent.

That is why, for those who have heard of this spectacular place in the Caribbean Sea, we know that getting to visit it is complex economically speaking, the cost of operating flights is high and the options that offer exclusive services in yachts and sailboats is also high.

But what is not generally known, neither inside nor outside the country is that there is a means of transportation, which is what most of the approximately 4000 inhabitants of the archipelago use when they need to move to the mainland for errands, shopping, health issues or any personal matter.

Justamente en el Gran Roque, se encuentra el aeropuerto, una pequeña pista de aterrizaje que recibe los vuelos de turistas en avionetas o aeronaves de pequeño tamaño. Llegar a Los Roques es tan costoso que la realidad es que quienes lo frecuentan son turistas extranjeros que por lo general no son siquiera del continente americano en su mayoría.

Es por eso que, para quienes hemos escuchado de este espectacular lugar del Mar Caribe sabemos que llegar a visitarlo es complejo economicamente hablando, el costo de operación de los vuelos es alto y las opciones que ofrecen servicios exclusivos en yates y veleros tambien lo es.

Pero lo que no saben por lo general, ni dentro ni fuera del país es que existe un medio de transporte, que es el que suelen utilizar la mayoría de los aproximadamente 4000 habitantes del archipielago cuando necesitan trasladarse a tierra firme por diligencias, compras, asuntos de salud o cualquier asunto personal.

There is also a lot of construction activity on the island at the moment and most of the workers are transported from different states of the country by this same means, this mobilization of workers is not done by air but by fast boats of great capacity.

This water transportation called TAP can be boarded at the port of La Guaira from where it departs and arrives at the Gran Roque dock in 4 or 5 hours. It costs much less than the price of airline tickets, even for residents of Los Roques the fare is lower. TAP does not sail every day, so you have to be aware of the days and times of departure.

I am not going to lie to you, I would prefer to take a flight and arrive in half an hour from La Guaira leaving from the airport of Maiquetia or from Margarita Island, especially because traveling by sea depends on the weather, like any trip, but in the case of the sea the affectation of the wind and waves is much greater.

It is very possible that most of the passengers will vomit along the way, for that, they have incredibly, a super efficient and highly trained crew to assist all passengers who require support, and in fact I found it very funny that in their work as crew, when giving the mandatory safety demonstration they hand out plastic bags to everyone and give the express indication that we keep them open to be able to use it in time when we need to vomit.

Este transporte acuático llamado TAP puede ser abordado en el puerto de La Guaira desde donde zarpa y llega hasta el muelle del Gran Roque en 4 o 5 horas de viaje. Cuesta mucho menos que el precio de los boletos aereos, incluso, para los residentes de Los Roques la tarifa a pagar es mas baja.

El TAP no zarpa todos los días, así que hay que estar pendiente de los días y horarios de salida.No voy a mentirles, preferiria tomar un vuelo y llegar en media hora desde la Guaira saliendo del aeropuerto de Maiquetía o desde la isla de Margarita, sobre todo porque viajar por mar depende del clima que hace, al igual que todo viaje, pero en el caso del mar la afectación del viento y las olas es mucho mayor.

Es muy posible que gran parte de los pasajeros vayan vomitando por el camino, para eso, tienen increiblemente, una tripulación super eficiente y muy capacitada para atender a todos los pasajeros que requieran apoyo, y de hecho me pareció muy gracioso que en su trabajo como tripulación, al dar la demostración de seguridad obligatoria ellos reparten bolsas plásticas a todos y dan la indicación expresa de que las mantengamos abiertas para poder usarla a tiempo cuando necesitamos vomitar.

On the outbound trip we were in the front seats and these turned out to be the worst, if you are going to travel on the TAP or any other fast boat of this type try not to sit in the front, you will thank me for this advice.

You may be a little scared with this part of the story, but believe me, it is worth it, just approaching the archipelago and begin to observe the landscape: the cays, the color of the water, the seabed that can be seen, the sand, the birds, and the town of Gran Roque that begins to be seen in the distance, it is worth the stormy that the trip can be.

The whole group that traveled with me vomited, not once, not twice, but several times, but the worst was my husband, the poor guy... we don't know how many times he vomited, he had to receive attention from paramedics, he lost consciousness and when he arrived at the island he was taken to the health center and had to receive hydration through a vein.

The boat left the port of La Guaira at 6:45 am and arrived at Gran Roque after 12 noon. We arrived to locate our posada and have lunch, all except my husband, who had to spend a couple of hours receiving medical attention.

Puede que se espanten un poco con esta parte del relato, pero créanme, merece la pena, tan solo aproximarse al archipiélago y comenzar a observar el paisaje: los cayos, el color del agua, el fondo marino que se puede ver, la arena, las aves, y el pueblo del Gran Roque que se comienza a apreciar a lo lejos, vale la pena lo tormentoso que puede llegar a resultar el viaje.

Todo el grupo que viajó conmigo vomitó, no una, ni dos, si no varias veces, pero a quien peor le resultó fue a mi esposo, el pobre... no sabemos cuantas veces vomitó, tuvo que recibir atención de paramédicos, perdió el conocimiento y al llegar a la isla lo llevaron al centro de salud y tuvo que recibir hidratación por vía venosa.

La embarcación salió del puerto de la Guaira a las 6:45 am y llegó al Gran Roque luego de las 12 del medio día. Llegamos a ubicar nuestra posada y almorzar, todos menos mi esposo, que tuvo que pasar un par de horas recibiendo atención médica.

The size of the dock on the island is not adequate for the TAP to dock on it, so the mechanism to finally! get off the boat is to make a transfer several meters from the island to boats or small boats in which, distributed in several groups we reached the dock. I loved this step, because from a small boat you can see everything much better, opening 360 degrees to marvel at our destination.

No todos los trayectos del TAP resultan tan tormentosos, como les expliqué, el clima influye mucho, pero nos explicaron que en este caso lo que mas nos afectó fue que se dañó el aire acondicionado en el camino y el Capitan detuvo el viaje para tratar de arreglarlo infructuosamente, esa parada en alta mar hizo que el oleaje nos mareara a todos y una vez retomado el viaje ya nada fue igual, por otra parte, no llevar el aire acondicionado encendido empeora las cosas porque el aire no puede circular fluidamente porque si abriamos mucho las ventanas nos mojabamos todos.

El tamaño del muelle en la isla no es adecuado para que el TAP pueda atracar en el, así que el mecanismo para, por fin! bajarse de la embarcación es hacer un trasbordo a varios metros de la isla hacia lanchas o peñeros pequeños en los cuales, distribuidos en varios grupos llegamos al muelle. Este paso me encantó, porque desde una lancha pequeña se puede ver todo mucho mejor, apertura de 360 grados para maravillarse con nuestro destino.
