Hui Ling held her breath as she turned the corner. She was in an art gallery, and she had a feeling that she'd bump into someone unexpected. It had happened before.
She took a step forward and her heart leaped into her throat because standing there—right in front of her—was Siaw Li, her best friend and ex-roommate. Hui Ling hadn't seen her in years, not since the wedding where Siaw Li had married Wei Ming, the guy who used to be Hui Ling's neighbor.
Being neighbors, Hui Ling and Wei Ming had known each other since they were kids. They practically grew up together and would play games with all the neighborhood kids. She can’t remember the exact time when she fell in love with We Ming, perhaps it was during her twelfth birthday when he gave her a cute doll accompanied with a birthday card that had kisses drawn on it. Hui Ling was uncertain how Wei Ming felt about her and so she never confessed her feelings for him.
Siaw Li looked better than ever: more fashionable, calmer, more grown-up. Hui Ling felt like a child by comparison. She wondered how Siaw Li would react if she knew that—even after all these years—Hui Ling still carried a torch for Wei Ming.
Siaw Li grabbed Hui Ling’s hand warmly “Come let us sit on this bench and talk”?
Hui Ling smiled awkwardly, trying to avoid eye contact with Wei Ming. "Long time no see" she muttered while trying to catch her breath.
Wei Ming nodded at Hui Ling, she smiled back shyly.
It's been such a long time since we last you. We must meet up soon", Siaw Li was genuinely very pleased to meet Hui Ling.
After exchanging some small talk, Hui Ling excused herself. Later that night, she could not sleep and was tossing around in the bed. The unexpected encounter made her realize that she had not forgotten about Wei Ming. The pain in her heart was still intense. As intense as the day she attended Hui Ling and Wei Ming's wedding. Tears poured on her cheek. She thought to herself, "Time is supposed to heal all hurts; why doesn't my pain go away?"
The stillness of the night made Hui Ling even sadder as she cried herself to sleep.
