Lately my days have been filled with a lot of tiredness and stress, so when I was thinking about what post to make, I knew I wanted to talk about something that would give me peace of mind, that would make me feel comforted. For this, there is almost nothing better than the Studio Ghibli films, and among the first ones I saw, as well as being among my favorites, is My Neighbor Totoro.
Today I will tell you my opinion about this iconic Japanese animation film without spoilers
Synopsis
My Neighbor Totoro (となりのトトロ "Tonari no Totoro"), is a film released in 1988 which tells the adventures of two little sisters called Mei and Satsuki. These girls had to move with their parents to a rural area of Japan in 1958 since their mother was hospitalized in a local hospital due to a serious illness.
Of course, the whole situation represents a big change for the family, as everyone, in their own way, is concerned about the mother's health. However, the girls will find that within all the negative stuff there is something magical, a world they had heard about before, but into which they never imagined they could enter...
Less is more
Many will know the impact this film has had since it has been quite famous since its release. However, if you expect it to be a deep story you are completely wrong. The plot is incredibly simple. There are no unexpected twists, there are no major dramas, there are none of the elements that are usually considered "deep" to generate an emotional impact on the viewer, but still it is possible to generate endless emotions using simple elements, which is precisely why the film stands out.
Situations as well as basic emotions are used in a simple and precise way that allow us to empathize with the characters quickly. They do not go on into character development or an excessively catastrophic situation, but rather they narrate a common circumstance in the life of any person where someone close falls ill and things change. By being something common, something that you can easily identify with, then generating an emotional impact is much more likely to happen, because it's easily relatable.
Precisely the emotions that the story mobilizes are basic but common, so you go on a journey of sadness, illusion, empathy, love, and above all hope with which you will connect many aspects of your own life. Furthermore, what makes the plot interesting is the mix between the simplicity of the human essence and the greatness of magic, so through fantasy using a representative figure that hope is expressed, or in other words, it represents that even in the worst situations where everything seems lost, there are small positive details, lights along the way that show us that not everything is so bad, and that there are things that can get better.
As for other aspects of the film, it is always interesting to see how the magic of these stories is really an adaptation of Japanese mythology, recreating beings that belong to their popular imagination and that in some way has had an influence on their beliefs.
It should also be noted that this fantasy, that magical aura, is perfectly complemented by beautiful animation, full of green landscapes and small colorful details, as well as endearing, pure and innocent characters.
As if that were not enough, as the "cherry on top" there is the soundtrack which is simply wonderful. It completely captivates the innocent and sweet essence of the story, making you feel a beautiful nostalgia after watching the film and listening to the music.

Últimamente mis días están cargados de bastante cansancio y estrés, por lo que al pensar en qué post hacer sabía que quería hablar de algo que me generará tranquilidad, que me hiciera sentir reconfortada. Para ello no hay casi nada mejor que las películas de Studio Ghibli, y entre las primeras que vi además de estar entre mis favoritas, está Mi vecino Totoro.
Hoy les comentaré mi opinión sobre esta icónica película de la animación japonesa sin spoilers
Sinopsis
Mi vecino Totoro (となりのトトロ "Tonari no Totoro"), es una película estrenada en el año 1988 la cual narra las aventuras de dos pequeñas hermanas llamadas Mei y Satsuki. Estas niñas tuvieron que mudarse junto a sus padres a una zona rural de Japón en 1958 puesto que su madre está internada en un hospital de la localidad debido a una grave enfermedad.
Por supuesto, toda la situación supone un gran cambio para la familia, así como todos, a su manera, sienten preocupación por la salud de la madre. Sin embargo, las niñas encontrarán que dentro de todo lo negativo hay algo mágico, un mundo del cual habían escuchado, pero en el que jamás se imaginaron que podrían adentrarse...

Muchos sabrán el impacto que ha tenido esta película puesto que ha sido bastante famosa desde su estreno. Sin embargo, si esperas que sea una historia profunda estás completamente equivocado. La trama es increíblemente simple. No hay giros inesperados, no hay dramas mayores, no hay nada de los elementos que usualmente se consideran «profundos» para generar un impacto emocional en el espectador, pero aún así sí se logra generar un sin fin de emociones utilizando elementos sencillos, lo cual es precisamente por lo que destaca la película.
De manera simple y precisa se utilizan situaciones así como emociones básicas que permiten empatizar con los personajes de una manera rápida. No se extienden en un desarrollo de personaje ni en una situación excesivamente catastrófica, sino que narran una circunstancia común de la vida de cualquier persona donde alguien cercano enferma y las cosas cambian. Al ser algo común, algo con lo que fácilmente puedes identificarte, entonces el generar un impacto emocional es mucho más probable.
Justamente las emociones que moviliza la historia son básicas pero usuales, por lo que vas por un viaje de tristeza, ilusión, empatía, amor, y sobretodo esperanza con el cual conectarás muchos aspectos de tu propia vida. Además lo que hace interesante la trama es la mezcla entre la simpleza de lo humano y lo grande de la magia, por lo que a través de la fantasía utilizando una figura representativa, se expresa esa esperanza o en otras palabras, se representa que incluso en las peores situaciones donde todo parece perdido, hay pequeños detalles positivos, luces en el camino que nos demuestran que no todo es tan malo, y que hay cosas que pueden mejorar.
En cuanto a otros aspectos de la película, siempre es interesante ver cómo la magia de estas historias es realmente una adaptación de la mitología japonesa, recreando seres que pertenecen a su imaginario popular y que de alguna manera ha tenido influencia en sus creencias.
También hay que destacar que esa fantasía, esa aura mágica, es perfectamente complementada con una animación preciosa, llena de paisajes verdes y pequeños detalles coloridos, así como personajes entrañables, puros e inocentes.
Por si fuera poco, como la «cereza del pastel» está la banda sonora que es sencillamente maravillosa. Cautiva completamente la esencia inocente y dulce de la historia, haciendo que después de ver la película al escuchar la música, sientas una bonita nostalgia.
