(ESP-ENG) Akira - Movie Review!

In anime there are many classics but if we had to put a movie at the top, it would undoubtedly have to be Akira, adaptation of one of the most powerful manga ever made, almost 2 thousand pages and which was in charge of Katsuhiro Ôtomo. This film was released in 1988, 36 years ago and when you see it today you realize how advanced and innovative it was for the time, both for its animation that is a spectacle and for the depth of its plot and the themes it touches. We are facing a cyberpunk that has been a reference to this day and for many this film is one of the most influential of all time; and yes, I had not seen it.

En el anime hay muchos clásicos pero si tuviéramos que poner bien arriba a una película sin dudas tendría que ser Akira, adaptación de uno de los mangas más poderosos que se han hecho, casi 2 mil páginas y que estuvo a cargo de Katsuhiro Ôtomo. Este film fue estrenado en 1988, hace 36 años y cuando lo ves hoy en día te das cuenta lo avanzado e innovador que esto fue para la época, tanto por su animación que es un espectáculo como por la profundidad de su trama y los temas que esta toca. Estamos ante un cyberpunk que ha sido referencia hasta nuestros días y es que para muchos esta película es una de las influyentes de todos los tiempos; y si, yo no la había visto.

We are located in 2019, in Neo-Tokyo, a city which is in ruins since it has been hit by the onslaught of a third world war. This made the population is on the verge of collapse in every way: political, economic, social and even religious as we will see some sects that before an imminent doom are having a lot of boom. There is a lot of violence and terrorism in the streets so the government, being a little sterile to control the situation, has decided to reactivate a project that seeks to find in people the “absolute energy”, which is nothing more than the exploitation of some alleged psychic abilities that everyone has using children as guinea pigs.

Nos ubicamos en el 2019, en el Neo-Tokyo, una ciudad la cual está en ruinas ya que sobre ella han caído los embates de una tercera guerra mundial. Esto hizo que la población esté al borde del colapso en todos los sentidos: político, económico, social y hasta religioso ya que veremos unas sectas que ante una inminente perdición están teniendo mucho auge. Mucha violencia y terrorismo hay en sus calles por lo que el gobierno, siendo un poco estéril para controlar la situación, ha decidido reactivar un proyecto que busca encontrar en las personas la "energía absoluta", que no es otra cosa que la explotación de unas supuestas habilidades psíquicas que todos tienen usando a niños como conejillos de indias.

But the city has other problems and they are the motorcycle gangs. Here we meet Kaneda and Tetsuo, two great friends who belong to one of these gangs and because they are in constant conflict with other gang members, one of them suffers an accident. Tetsuo is badly injured and is taken to a military facility where they realize that he possesses this “absolute energy”. Little by little he develops these powers and starts to become a real threat so everyone, including Kaneda, will try to stop him. The plot is very enigmatic because it is difficult to present what is really happening, little by little we are given clues that makes one is always in expectation.

Pero la ciudad tiene otros problemas y son las bandas de motociclistas. Acá conocemos a Kaneda y Tetsuo, dos grandes amigos que pertenecen a una de estas bandas y que por estar en un constante conflicto con otros pandilleros uno de ellos sufre un accidente. Tetsuo queda muy mal herido y es llevado a unas instalaciones militares en donde se dan cuenta que es poseedor de esta "energía absoluta". Poco a poco él va desarrollando esos poderes y se comienza a convertir en una verdadera amenaza por lo que todo el mundo, incluido Kaneda, tratarán de detenerlo. La trama es muy enigmática porque le cuesta presentarnos lo que realmente está pasando, poco a poco nos van dando pistas que hace que uno siempre esté a la expectativa.

I feel that it is a super complex and deep story because it touches on issues such as power, survival, conspiracies, secrets and coups, social problems, the degradation of a society and of course the individual himself, Tetsuo is the perfect example, he was always the weakest, the one who was always helped, the one who had no say so when he saw himself with these inhuman capabilities, evidently something in him wakes up or dies, as you want to see it, and he frees himself from himself. It is a story which is a journey and even a reflection of how cities are today, that's why I think its background is very valid. Honestly, it's impossible to get bored, there's always something going on.

Siento que es una historia super compleja y profunda porque toca temas como el poder, la supervivencia, conspiraciones, secretos y golpes de estado, problemas sociales, la degradación de una sociedad y claro está la del propio individuo, Tetsuo es el ejemplo perfecto, él siempre fue el más débil, al que siempre ayudaban, el que no podía opinar por lo que al verse con esas capacidades inhumanas pues evidentemente algo en él se despierta o se muere, como lo quieran ver, y se libera de si mismo. Es una historia la cual es un viaje y hasta un reflejo de como son las ciudades hoy en día, es por eso que creo que es muy vigente su trasfondo. Sinceramente es imposible aburrirse, siempre está pasando algo.

The best thing about this film is its animation. It's really crazy that this is more than 35 years old. The shots of the city are amazing, I repeated the scenes to see them twice because of how well done they are. The bright and saturated colors typical of the genre, the use of 3D with the technology of those times is impressive, the character design is rough but with a very high level of detail, the fluidity of the scenes and well of course, the violence. It is a violent film, there is blood and gore and that in animation is gold. There is a reason why this film has such a cult following, there are films made in this era that are not even a quarter of this great classic.

Lo mejor de este film es su animación. Es una auténtica locura que esto sea de hace más de 35 años. Los planos de la ciudad son asombrosos, repetía las escenas para verlos dos veces de lo bien logrados que están. Los colores brillantes y saturados típicos del género, el uso del 3D con la tecnología de aquellos tiempos es impresionante, el diseño de los personajes es tosco pero con un nivel de detalle muy alto, la fluidez de las escenas y bueno claro, la violencia. Es una película violenta, hay sangre y gore y eso en la animación es oro. Por algo a este film se le rinde tanto culto, hay películas hechas en esta época que no son ni la cuarta parte de este gran clásico.

As for the characters, I want to focus only on Tetsuo. He is a young man who only wants and aspires to be respected and taken into account by others, being the youngest of the group that does not happen, which caused him certain attitude problems. Deep down, and despite what is seen in the film, I do believe that he cares about his own, the issue is that this “absolute energy” eats away at him and consumes him to the point of blinding him and making him lose his mind. This is a sign that power clouds the mind. Briefly, Kaneda acts as the older brother, despite his differences with Tetsuo, he always tries to save him, which is very commendable.

En cuanto a los personajes me quiero centrar solo en Tetsuo. Es un joven que lo único que quiere y aspira es que los demás lo respeten y lo tomen en cuenta, al ser el menor de ese grupo eso no pasa lo que le originó ciertos problemas de actitud. En el fondo y a pesar de lo que se ve en la película si creo que se preocupa por los suyos, el tema es que esa "energía absoluta" lo carcome y consume al punto de cegarlo y hacerlo perder el juicio. Esto es una muestra de que el poder nubla la mente. Brevemente decir que Kaneda actúa como el hermano mayor, a pesar de las diferencias con Tetsuo siempre busca salvarlo cosa que es muy loable.

All in all, a powerful movie, one of the best you will ever see. Top animation (see the GIFS), entertaining plot, deep dialogues, violence, gore, blood, drama, an absolute ten. It lasts a little over two hours. I leave the trailer below.

En fin, una película potente, de las mejores que verán. Animación top (vean los GIFS), trama entretenida, diálogos profundos, violencia, gore, sangre, drama, un diez absoluto. Dura poco más de dos horas. Les dejo el tráiler acá abajo.
