Ever since I started playing quenas and Native American Flutes, I have become enthralled with the cultures from which they hailed. Many times over the years I have wanted to get myself a sweet Peruvian Chullu hat and poncho - but I have always opted either to get a new flute or buy GME stock/Hive…but not anymore!
I found a hat and poncho that were just right for me, and at a great price, together on Alpaca Mall. Hand made in Peru, I like to believe buying these items directly from the source also helps feed the communities that I love so much.
Like a typical consumer, as soon as I placed the order I began wondering how long it would take to get here. I tempered my expectations and waited out the weekend without checking my email. I took Monday off to pack my house, and today I went in to work and found my packages waiting for me! So it took less than three business days to get here - and shipping was free.
Gamboa appears to be the name of the actual manufacturer, and they’ve got all kinds of cool stuff, lots of which is a hybrid of traditional and modern styles. It will be a while before I allow myself to spend money on new clothes again, but when that time comes, I will be going back to Gamboa through Alpaca Mall.
Of course the first thing I had to do was play some quena. It felt really cool to feel so closely related to my heroes of the past, and from the quena-sphere in general.

I know it’s just clothes, but it really is an honor to wear these beautiful colors while I make windsongs.
…and the Chullu hat is reversible!
I’m looking forward to including these sweet alpaca wool elements into my future recordings - they certainly help put my mind and spirit in the right place.
