This Thursday, February 8, has been a day of recurring rain at my house. The sky was covered with gray clouds all day. The cold this day was not bad, it was simply a refreshing day. I don't have much to share about my #life in terms of personal matters, since I haven't really done much.
So, I better move on once to comment on the anniversary of #History that I chose for today. It is a celebration that falls into the field of religiosity, philosophy, the history of religious thought… It is actually a very interesting date, from several perspectives. Today is 'Nirvana Day'.

Este jueves, 8 de febrero, ha sido un día de recurrente lluvia por mi casa. El cielo estuvo todo el día cubierto de nubes grises. El frío de este día no ha estado mal, simplemente ha sido un día refrescante. No tengo mucho para compartir sobre mi #vida en cuanto a asuntos personales, pues no he hecho gran cosa en verdad.
Así que, mejor paso de una vez a comentar sobre la efeméride de la #Historia que escogí para hoy. Se trata de una celebración que cae en el campo de la religiosidad, de la filosofía, de la historia del pensamiento religioso… En realidad es una fecha muy interesante, desde varias perspectivas. Hoy es el ‘Día de Nirvana’.

That legendary band of Alternative Rock, Punk Rock and Grunge; headed by the late Kurt Cobain. Por cierto, cuando vi esa frase en el listado de las efemérides, yo pensé que estábamos hablando de la Banda musical norteamericana de los años 90. Aquella banda legendaria de Rock Alternativo, Punk Rock y Grunge; encabezada por el difunto Kurt Cobain. Que tenía unas canciones muy emblemáticas de esa generación pre-milenio, tal como ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’.

Well, any die-hard Nirvana fan might hate me for mentioning this song. It was the most popular song, and it became an anthem. But it was so popular that even Cobain himself came to hate it. It's a shame, because it has good lyrics, a powerful voice, and some guitar riffs that I loved listening to while writing this post.
But, it is not that nirvana that is celebrated today, it is a celebration in honor of the moment of enlightenment, awakening or 'extinguishing of the ego' of the Buddha Siddhartha Gautama. #Buddha was born as a prince, but at an early age he renounced everything and dedicated himself to asceticism, meditation and deep reflection. He lived between the 6th and 5th centuries BC, and left a philosophical legacy that continues to this day.

La palabra #Nirvana es aún más antigua, pertenece a la lengua sánscrita, y creo que estaba registrada en los viejos textos Vedas. Al inicio se puede traducir como ‘apagar’, pero toma un significado más complejo cuando tratamos de explicar qué cosa es lo que se apaga. Es un término que tiene presencia en el hinduismo, jainismo y budismo, pero la versión que me es más familiar es justamente la de este último grupo.

La idea de trascender al mundo y sus ataduras es bien interesante. Cae en el tema del misticismo y la religiosidad, pero igual me resulta atractivo, además de que me gusta la postura tradicional de que no se requiere adoración ni una fe ciega, más bien se requiere constancia y una mente dispuesta para el trabajo. Paradójicamente, es para enfocarse en el trabajo de ‘apagar el diálogo interno de la mente’, a fin de que logremos percibir el mundo y sus objetos, en lugar de cegar nuestros sentidos con las ilusiones mentales de como es el mundo y lo que hay en él.
Esto es lo que explica por qué es que se usa la palabra apagado, Nirvana, para describir ese momento en que la persona se libera de los grilletes del autoengaño y percibe un atisbo de la realidad. Supongo que la menor manera de celebrar esta fecha es meditando un poco… Me pregunto si meditar con la música de Nirvana de fondo cuenta para esta celebración (sonrisa personal).
