A Question of Ethics: Mandatory Organ Donation

Life they say is fickle. There’s a Ghanaian proverb that says, ‘wotanfo b3 nya woa na 3y3 yare3’ which translates into ‘ if your enemies will be happy then it will be when you’re sick. As we step out of our households every blessed day, we put ourselves at so many risks all in our quest to earn a living. You never know what may happen to you while going about your daily activities.

Our health is our wealth, but sometimes it’s out of our control. People are born with so many illnesses while some also fall seriously ill during their life time. Regardless, we all try to make sure we are healthy. However, in some cases, much more than just drugs are needed. Some people are born with no sight or even heart issues.A close friend of mine got operated on around 2018 for hole in heart and the sad part of all this is, she’s had this for her whole life. When she was born, the doctors told her mom she had asthma and this friend of mine spent about 18 years of her life using inhalers, thinking she was asthmatic.

Everything became clear when she met a specialist on one of her visits to the hospital. And through various tests, it came to our realisation she had a hole in heart and not asthma. For her case, she was operated on and everything was sorted out. But not everyone gets to have things go this way for them. People come down with kidney failures, heart diseases and what have you and the only way to keep them alive is by having a transplant. Now, the big question is, where are you going to get these organs from?

For most organ donations, the slot for the organ is filled even before the organ is even gotten and in most cases, it goes to people with connections. Now , I guess we all know what happens to those without connections. They keep waiting every passing day, hoping to get an organ that will save their lives but when will this miracle they are waiting for happen? Personally, I believe what goes around, comes around and so I would with no doubt agree to give out my organs if I die.

This is totally unrelated but with the way things are hard, I wouldn’t really mind selling a kidney or even half of my heart.😂 I would have no use for these organs if I die from hunger. But yeah, I believe we would do more good than harm if we agree to give give out some of our organs to those who need it after our demise. I understand most people might be against it because of maybe the life the individual might have lived and all of those spiritual stuff. I wouldn’t say I know much about the spiritual effects of organ donation but I know that we don’t donate an organ with bad intentions.

Moreover, if it should be something the government has made mandatory, we wouldn’t really have a choice in a way but then, I don’t think we as humans would totally be against this whole movement. Imagine giving out your kidney, lungs or other organs to those in need of it after your demise. That’s some heroic move right there and we would all be happy we were able to help others even after our demise. Personally, I wouldn’t mind but I don’t know for others as I believe this topic is subjective.
