My country fought so hard to change from the military rule to a democratic system because it is believed that the citizens would be much involved when it comes to the affairs of the government. True, the democratic system of government is much more better than the former where citizens had to live in fear of not being beheaded but then a lot has eaten deep down into the government and certain things the people are to enjoy is cut of from them.
One of the things of which I see wrong with today's democracy is that citizens are not given the liberty to voice out their plight. These days, although a few are courageous to speak but we can hand pick them..... what about the majority and the common man who want to speak yet live in fear of being killed or their families.
The Nigeria democracy is supposed to allow every of it citizens to speak out as it is one of the freedom we have ever since the military rule was abolished and the civilian rule came into power but then it is only unfortunate that, that particular freedom is defined now even though it has not been passed to bill but the truth can't be hidden. It is even worse that those who tried to speak out are faced with one challenges or the other and in most case had to kiss the earth goodbye either by physical ambush or the other way round (spiritual)
I also believed democracy was well defined from the onset to be a system of the people, by the people and for the people which apparently means when it comes to governing, power is vested on the people to elect who they desire fit to lead them. Only unfortunate that the people do not have little or no say when it comes to electing their own leaders as political aspirants now sees it as a turn by turn affair. Election is no longer free and fair making the right person to emerge as the winner all because of fake vots, stealing ballot boxes and all sort of astrocities done during election period. Our votes no longer counts their vote does. We no longer have a say we just dance according to their tune and that's why today the country keeps growing from bad to worse. These have so frustrated the people they no longer want to go out and exercise their rights of which I won't blame anyone because at the end the whole process would be tempered with and some loose their lives during the process.
Lastly, for things to go back to normal, freedom of speech should be fully restored back without anyone scared of dying, election should not be dabble with let the people's choice their own man as the winner. When this is implemented I believe the country would be at it sure best.
