Coffee stories: Capuccino

Cappuccino

The year was 1683, and the winds of war were blowing through Europe at the hands of the Ottoman Empire. The Turks wanted to expand their dominion over the continent and Pope Innocent XI wanted to unite the Europeans in a campaign against the Turks, so he sent Marco da Aviano, a Capuchin friar, to the city of Vienna.

Marco arrived in the beautiful city of Vienna with a clear mission entrusted by the Pope. While touring the city and before he visited the emperor, he decided to stop for a delicious coffee, it was a delight he could not resist. He looked for a place where he could satisfy his need for caffeine, at that moment he was carried away by the most delicious smell coming from a coffee shop.

The aroma of freshly brewed coffee invited the friar to follow the trail to its point of origin. His steps led him to the place, he entered and looked from one side to the other scanning every corner of the place. His desire for caffeine made him go without delay to where the barista was.

"Good morning, son, could you pour me a coffee, please." The friar sat down heavily trying to relax a little from the trip.

"Of course, friar, I'll make your order right away." The boy quickly ran to prepare the coffee for the friar.

After a few minutes, the boy arrived with a cup of coffee, which was subtly dancing on the porcelain plate. The man arrived at the friar and served him the delicious dark coffee.

"Friar, there is the coffee you asked for. I hope you like it."

"Thank you very much, son." The friar took the cup with delirious happiness, his pupils dilated and his mouth ready to receive the delicious coffee.

He put his lips to the porcelain cup and took a deep sip, at that instant, he felt an intense bitterness to which he was not accustomed. He put the cup down, somewhat disappointed at not being able to drink the coffee to his liking. His caffeine cravings had been cut short by the bitterness, not so familiar to his palate.

"What's wrong, friar?" asked the barista anxious to know the answer.

"Excuse me, son, I can't drink this coffee, its bitterness is not normal for me." He let out a sigh into the air laden with the aroma of coffee, and then he had an idea and asked the barista. "Son, could you add a little milk to lessen the bitterness?"

"Of course, friar. I'll get some milk right away." The boy would run to the kitchen and after a few minutes, he would add some milk with plenty of foam to the coffee.

At that instant, the coffee took on a color similar to the friar's cassock and in a joking gesture the barista blurted out a word that gave birth to the most famous coffee preparation. "Kapuziner!!!"

This story is fictionalized but was inspired by historical facts that happened during 1863. The origin of the Cappuccino is based on the legends of the inhabitants of Vienna.
