For Pirates Only Cafe

June 24, 2023

Back when I was on Cheung Chau Island, I decided to look for a cafe I saw online located by the beach. I thought it would be perfect for the #CinnamonCupOfCoffee community and @millycf1976 might love it too. Excitedly, I headed to Tung Wan Beach to look for the place.

The #TheCoffeeShopPrompt17 asked:

Do you go to a coffee shop for socializing, or work? What experiences have you had when seeking that ideal coffee shop? What was the most appealing thing about the last coffee shop that you visited for either reason?

And I thought this is also perfect for this prompt.

I've traveled to this island five times, but the cafe is new to me, so I used Google Maps to find it. Along the beach, I found the East Coast Cafe, where I planned to eat lunch. My expectations were fairly high because this cafe is at the top of the list of the best ones on the island. Unfortunately, there aren't many food and coffee options at the cafe, and it serves more alcohol. I should have loved to eat there because it overlooks the ocean, but I didn't like the meal, so I left.

The fact that it is located by the beach, the clear water was truly tempting. I missed walking barefoot on the sand, and seeing people enjoying the clear water made me regret not preparing the things I needed for swimming. This was mentioned in my blog about this beach. Since I was unprepared, I just enjoyed watching the calming water, the captivating mountainous backdrop, and the blue sky.

I found another cafe online, situated on the other end of the coast. On my way, I passed by a group of Filipinos under the shade of tree canopies. Some have tents, while some just brought their mats.

I walked by the sea and traced the location of the cafe. I also regretted not packing an umbrella because it was so hot outside that I felt like my skin was on fire. I had only my cap on when I walked under the scorching sun, and it was clearly insufficient for sun protection. The closer I got to the location, the happier I became, but my stomach was more eager to eat because it was already growling, and I was more eager to sit indoors or under a shade because it was growing hotter, which made me uncomfortable.

Each time I look for my ideal coffee shop, there is always something that happens: either I get lost tracing Google Maps, or encounter something on my way that has a negative consequence on me.

I finally spotted the windsurfing center near the helicopter landing area. The site for booking surfing courses, parties, and barbecues is on the wall below the platform.

The cafe is in the outdoor area of the island's windsurfing center, located on the higher ground facing the beach.

For pirates only!

That's what it says at the counter. I am not a pirate, but I am hungry, so let me eat, I thought when I saw the sign. I was hoping to see better food than the first cafe I visited so I could dine in, especially since the view is much better and truly relaxing.

The cafe has a pirate ship concept, and it truly looks cool. It offers free beers tomorrow, but tomorrow always comes and never ends, so you know what it means. Clever enough to encourage customers who won't get the humor to come back the next day. There's a pirate ship navigator wheel, a hunting wood gun, and different bottles of beer on display at the cafe's counter.

It isn't spacious enough to cater big parties, only small ones, but there is enough space to unwind while admiring the beauty of nature overlooking the tranquil sea.

I immediately placed my order, which consisted of an iced latte and waffle ice cream. I was looking for a rice set, but unfortunately, it's hard to find one even at other cafes I checked. They also serve pasta, finger foods, and other snacks. Since it was too hot, there was no reason for me to order hot coffee. A glass of iced latte was first served by a Filipino guy working in the cafe.

I waited for my waffle ice cream to complete my food on the table and take good snaps. The backdrop is truly perfect, and I so loved it.

I wondered how the Filipino guy got his job, and I felt like I wanted to work in the cafe too, given its beautiful setting and view. I would probably be inspired to work enthusiastically each day if I were in this kind of place.

When dining in a cafe, it isn't to work or socialize, but purely to look for good food in a good place with a pretty setting and relaxing ambiance. But oftentimes, when I encounter fellow Filipinos, I usually chat with them and talk about random stuff. However, on that day, I was hesitant to ask the Filipino guy, as he looked busy with his job.

Anyway, given that it is the windsurfing center's outdoor cafe, there are surfing boards everywhere, which adds attraction to the place. These bottles of beer were creatively arranged behind the surfing boards.

On the side is another outdoor dining area, and it is also a perfect spot to rest. Simple, but it would make you feel like you are in a garden.

The most appealing thing about this place, aside from the food, is definitely the scenic view of the cafe's alfresco dining area. It offers a better view of the beach, where people are enjoying the warmth of summer, and is the best spot to take the panoramic view of the east coast. In the water, some were windsurfing, some were kayaking, and some were comfortably resting under umbrella shades while enjoying the view of the blue waters and clear sky.

The next time I visit the place again, I'll make sure to soak in the water and bask in the sun while lying on the beach's fine white sand.

You can check this short video taken at this place.

That concludes my journey to this coffee shop. I hope you like it. Happy weekend!
