Yes, the Taiwanese were very friendly to foreigners.
I understand your situation for not being able to go back home. It's the same for me, I had plans to visit Jamaica (home) the year Covid came, and with everything I still haven't had the chance to go back there. Luckily I was able to leave the Philippines were I was living for 7 years to go back to the UK.
I do hop things will improve so you can make it back home :)
