Warhammer 40k - Army Rule Review Series!

Source

The thing that is going to make reviews of Warhammer 40k rules challenging is the pace at which it changes!

I have been doing reviews of all the Tournament Legal Datasheets in a randomized sequence in the Warhammer 40k - Unit Review Library (which now has 88 entries!), but it is now time to start putting all these individual reviews together in bits, with their respective Army Rules.

So let me explain...

Order of Selection

When you select an faction to play, you need to select the ARMY that you want to play. This would mean things like "Orks" or "Astra Militarum" or "Chaos Daemons". These are all examples of Armies in the game.

Once you have selected an Army, this gives your army an Army Rule.

Army

Warhammer 40k Army:
Dark Angels*
Adepta Sororitas
Adeptus Custodes
Adeptus Mechanicus
Chaos Space Marines
Genestealer Cults
Necrons
Orks
Space Marines*
Tyranids
T’au Empire
Aeldari
Astra Militarum
Black Templars*
Blood Angels*
Chaos Daemons
Chaos Knights
Death Guard
Deathwatch*
Drukhari
Emperor’s Children
Grey Knights
Imperial Agents**
Imperial Knights
Leagues of Votann
Space Wolves*
Thousand Sons
World Eaters

  • Space Marine Armies have many Chapters, the Space Marine Codex allows you to play a vast variety of them, when you use an Chapter specific unit from a specific Chapter, you cannot use other Chapter specific units in that same army.
There are divergent Chapters who all can use everything from the Space Marine Codex, unless restrictions are enforced, as well as everything in their own Codex/Index
** Technically Imperial Agents are not a playable army, they get added to other Imperial Armies!

Detachment

Once you have selected an Army, you can select a Detachment. Most armies that still have 10th Edition Indexes and no Codexes have only 1 Detachment. The Armies that have received their own Codex generally have 3-8 Detachments.

A Detachment comes with Detachment Rules, plus Enhancements for Characters and 6 Stratagems specific to that Detachment.

Example:

Army: Index: Astra Militarum
Detachment Options:

  • Combined Regiment

Army: Codex: Adeptus Custodes
Detachment Options:

  • Talons of the Emperor
  • Shield Host
  • Null Maiden Vigil
  • Auric Champions

So we can see that currently the Astra Militarum can ONLY field a Combined Refgiment while the Adeptus Custodes have an option of 4 different Detachements!

Datasheets

After selecting an Army and a Detachment, you are now free to select units with the correct keywords from the Datasheet list for your army.

The Astra Militarum have an Army rule, one Detachment, but 89 Datasheets.

The Adeptus Custodes use an Army rule, four different Detachment rules, but then use units from 31 Datasheets!

So the scale and scope of armies vary greatly and there is a lot of content to cover! Lucky me! Haha.

So I shall start with army rules, one by one. As much as possible I will use Datasheets already reviewed for that Army, if not possible, I will draw on Datasheets to make examples of units.

I look forward to writing many more reviews. Thank you so much for reading and all your support!
