Thinking of Austria, most people probably will have mountains and winter sports coming to their minds. Then maybe Vienna, the Empress Sissi, Mozart and Salzburg and mostly that's it.
All this is quite "far away" from the Austrian province of Styria, where I live. No, not in kilometers, Austria isnt that big, that anything could be really far away, but it sometimes seems that way to me, a kind of different land.
@friendlymoose has announced the theme "Your Country" for the POB Photocontest and since today is also Earth Hour day I would like to show you some photos of the Styrian landscape. The Land I grew up and live.
Welcome to Styria, the second largest province of Austria. Styria is also called the "green heart of Austria" because we have the highest proportion of forested land (over 60% are covered with forest).
While the Alps still dominate the landscape in the northwest, the mountains become lower and lower towards the southeast and the Pre-Alps finally run out here in the region of Graz. Graz, my hometown is the capital of Styria and with 291.000 inhabitants the 2nd largest city in Austria.
From here on, the "Südsteirische Hügelland" (south Styrian hills land) starts and stretches out to the South, including in it's geographical origin a part from Slovenian Land.
There was a great sea here infinitely long time ago, and later it was a volcanic land. The volcanoes extinguished about 10 million years ago, leaving behind a very fertile land, which received its final touch in the last ice age by the glaciers.
While the Graz Basin directly near Graz is still bordered by low mountains to the east, north and west, it opens up to the South Styrian Hill Country to the south. A land, because of the milder climate, is besides of the pumpkin seeds and pumpkin seed oil, especially famous for its wine growing on the fertile hills.

Die Steiermark, mein Land, meine Erde
Die meisten denken bei "Österreich" wohl an Berge und Wintersport. Dann vielleicht noch an Wien, die Kaiserin Sissi, Mozart und Salzburg kommen ihnen in den Sinn und das wars meist auch schon.
Das alles ist vom österreichischen Bundesland Steiermark, in dem ich lebe gefühlt recht weit entfernt. Nicht in Kilometern, aber sinngemäß erscheint es mir manchmal so.
@friendlymoose hat für den POB Photocontest das Thema "Mein Land" ausgerufen und da heute auch der Earth Hour Tag ist will ich euch gerne ein paar Fotos der steirischen Landschaft zeigen. Das Land in dem ich aufgewachsen bin und lebe.
Willkommen in der Steiermark, dem zweitgrößten Bundesland von Österreich. Die Steiermark wird auch das "grüne Herz Österreichs" genannt, weil wir den höchsten bewaldeten Flächenanteil (über 60%) haben.
Während im Nordwesten noch die Alpen das Landschaftsbild prägen, werden die Gebirge nach Südosten hin immer niedriger und die Voralpen laufen schließlich hier im Grazer Becken aus. Graz, meine Heimatstadt ist die Hauptstadt der Steiermark und mit ca 291.000 Einwohnern die 2. größte Stadt Österreichs.
Von hier an erstreckt sich das Südsteirische Hügelland, das in seinem geographischen Ursprung auch einen Teil des heutigen Slowenien umfaßt.
Hier gab es vor unendlich langer Zeit ein großes Meer, später war es ein Vulkanland. Die Vulkane erloschen vor cirka 10 Millionen Jahren und zurück blieb ein sehr fruchtbares Land, das seinen letzten Schliff in der letzten Eiszeit durch die Gletscher erhielt.
Während das Grazer Becken direkt bei Graz im Osten, Norden und Westen noch von niederen Bergen umrandet ist, öffnet es sich nach Süden hin zum Südsteirischen Hügelland. Ein Land, das wegen des milderen Klimas, nicht nur für Kürbiskerne und Kürbiskernöl, sondern vor allem für seinen Weinanbau auf den fruchtbaren Hügeln berühmt ist.
