Index4INDEX Card 235: Nastia Liukin 1

If you are afraid of failure, you don't deserve success.

-- Nastia Liukin

About the Quote

If we're afraid of failure, then we're afraid of risk, and we're afraid of taking risk. While we don't like to fail, we also need to realize that-- under normal circumstances-- failure isn't final. Failure is temporary, and it's part of the learning process.

If our minds aren't set right, it can take a long time to bounce back from failure. That's time we'll never get back. So we need to try again. If we fail when we try again, then we fail. However, this time we have more data we can use to move closer to success. Just as important, time between failure and another attempt becomes shorter.

We should be ready to fail as often as possible, if only to get that part of the learning process out of the way. This allows time between failure and next trial to be shorter. When we've learned what we need to learn from failure, then success occurs more often and at a faster rate.

We deserve whatever success we get if we're willing to accept failure from trying. Whether we fail or succeed, we need to be moving forward toward lasting success. Failure is just part of the process.

Some Information about Nastia Liukin

Anastasia Valeryevna Lyukina was born in Moscow, Russia, USSR on 1989-October-30.

Better known as Nastia Liukin, she is an American gymnast who won 5 Olympic medals at the 2008 Beijing Summer Games-- more than any other gymnast at those Olympics.

Nastia Liukin was both a gymnast and is a child of high-caliber gymnasts. Her father and coach is Valery Lyukin, a Soviet gymnast born in Kazakhstan, who won 4 Olympic medals at the 1899 Seoul Summer Games. Her mother is Anna Kochneva, who also competed for the USSR and the 1987 world champion in rhythmic gymnastics. After the fall of the USSR the family moved to Plano, texas, US. That's where the naturalized Valery Liukin co-founded WOGA (World Olympic Gymnastics Academy).

Surprisingly, Nastia Liukin's parents had objected to her early interest in gymnastics. However, after she began her gymnastics career, she would become known for how effortless she made gymnastics look thanks to her grace and style as well as the long lines she employed.
