Don't bunt. Aim out of the ballpark. Aim for the company of immortals.

About the Quote
We aim for the stars because if we don't reach them we can still reach the moon. Whenever we do something, we do our best as we go for the big prize and accept the prize we receive. If we aim only for the target nearest us and we don't reach it, we don't move; instead, we stay in place.
As much as we want to win every time, that doesn't happen. But if we set out to do something ambitious and we fall short, we can still advance.
We aim for the company of immortals in the hope that we can join them. Halls of Fame are the best examples of this both in sports and in the culture more broadly. Even if we don't join the company of immortals, we can still end up as the best of our class or generation; that's not bad, either.

He is also author of books about advertising and marketing, including Confessions of an Advertising Man and the self-titled David Ogilvy: An Autobiography.
David Ogilvy came from a well-to-do family, but when he was growing up the family fell on hard times. He did well enough academilcally to earn scholarships to both Fettes College in Edinburgh, Scotland, UK as well as to Christ Church at Oxford University. He left Oxford without a degree, and for most people that would have been devestating.
For a while after he cut short his academic career at Oxford, David Ogilvy worked at a hotel in Paris, France as an apprentice to a demanding chef. He also worked as a salesman selling stoves. One of Ogilvy's brothers had been working at the British advertising agency Mather & Crowther, and he offered brother David a job there. A short time after joining Mather & Crowther, he had become an account executive.
Mather & Crowther had sent David Ogilvy to the United States to learn the best advertising techniques which worked there. Early in his American tour of discovery he worked for legendary pollster George Gallup. The methods used by Gallup impressed Ogilvy so much that he carried them into his own advertising work. When Ogilvy was asked who deserved credit for his amazing track record and success in advertising, he gave credit to George Gallup.
