Octavia Butler had written "Speech Sounds," which in 1984 had won Best Short Story as awarded by the World Science Fiction Society. Just as awards from the Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences are better known as the Academy Awards or The Oscars, awards presented by the WSFS are better known as the Hugo Awards.
In 1984, her story "Bloodchild" not only won a Hugo Award but also a Nebula Award.
1995 was a milestone year for Octavia Butler. The collection of related stories called Bloodchild and Other Stories was published. She also became the first writer in the science fiction genre to be awarded a MacArthur Foundation fellowship.
In 2000, Octavia Butler had received a lifetime achievement award from PEN.
