Octavia Butler was an award-winning science fiction novelist whose books featured themes such as future societies and superhuman powers. He novels were a unique blend of science fiction, mythology, mysticsm, and African-American spiritualism.
Octavia Butler earned her Associate in Art degree in 1968 from Pasadena City College. She also attended California State University and University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). After her college education ended in 1970, she was encouraged by writer Harlan Ellison to begin her writing career.
The first of her novels was published in 1976: Patternmaster. This was the first of the five-novel Patternist series:
