Index4INDEX Card 192: Arthur C. Clarke 1

The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible.

-- Arthur C. Clarke

About the Quote

We don't know what we're capable of doing if we don't do anything. We have to discover our limits, then we have to see how we can get past them. If we can't get past our limits, we should be able at least to push the limits further and further. Getting outside our comfort zone is one one to push our limits further.

Some Information about Arthur C. Clarke

Arthur Charles Clarke was born in Minehead, England, UK on 1917-December-16. He died in Colombo, Sri Lanka on 2008-March-19.

Arthur C. Clarke is best known as both author of the science fiction novel 2001: A Space Odyssey as well as writer of the screenplay for the Stanley Kubrick movie of the same title.

Since boyhood he was interested in science; however, at the time he lacked the means to obtain a higher education. In 1934, when he was 16 or 17, he joined the British Inperplanetary Society (BIS). BIS was a small but advanced group which advocated for the development of rocketry and human space exploration.

From 1936 to 1941 Clarke worked as an auditor for the government. From 1941 to 1946 he served in the Royal Air Force. While serving in the RAF he was a radar instructor and technician.

Clarke would go on to serve as chairman of the BIS across two separate terms: 1946 to 1947 and 1951 to 1953.

In 1945 Clarke wrote an article titled "Extra-Terrestrial Relays" for the periodical Wireless World. In this article he described a system of communication satellites which served as relays for transmitting radio and television signals from one end of the world to the other. By 1965 this system would be realized and operational.
