Yes, he was free but if you keep him, his 160k/season salary will bury you. The good news is you do not have to pay him until your league starts so you have a good shot at turning him in some free cash. For playing, you are better off spending low five digits on reasonable-salary players (you are going to need 10-11 of those for your starting squad).
