A Follow-Up on the Idea of Including Compliments in Every Post for Content Curation in the FreeCompliments Community

Last week, we opened up a community vote regarding the idea of curating and rewarding posts only if they include a compliment, and idea originally introduced by @atma.love. To my initial surprise, there were actually quite mixed responses to this! However, I made sure to read people’s reasoning, and I found sense in their logic. Although I did not reply in that post, I made sure to read every comment and think about it.

The Outcome of the Vote

There were slightly more votes against, as compared to in favor of, requiring the inclusion of compliments in posts. The two piece of reasoning that stuck most with me was the inclusion of “forced” compliments, and the exclusion of high quality content from potential curation.

I’ve always been a proponent of giving genuine compliments to people, and requiring the inclusion of compliments would likely lead to some forced compliments. This is not a good outcome and would only serve to cheapen the effect we’re trying to achieve.

Additionally, it’s possible that some people would try to include compliments on rather simplistic posts just to ensure curation and rewards, while a post that might accidentally forget to include a compliment would end up getting nothing. This is also a highly unfair outcome which we do not want arising.

The FreeCompliments Community, while focused on giving compliments, is certainly more than just that. Thus, we are not going to require compliments for curation, but I will bring up another idea:

Another Little Vote!

Let’s say that we have two posts with identical content, except one includes a genuine compliment towards another person, in proper context, and the other one does not. Should we give a slightly higher curation percentage to that post that includes this compliment?

For instance, a high quality post could get a 45% vote on its own, but maybe 50% if it includes a well-placed, genuine compliment. A lower quality post could get a 15% vote on its own, but maybe 18% if it includes a well-placed, genuine content. No extra HSBI would be rewarded unless the compliment is so extravagant and unique that it warrants extra rewards simply based on quality.

Now, let’s phrase this as an actual practical question:

Should we provide slightly higher curation (a few percent maximum) to posts that happen to include a genuine compliment, compared to posts that do not include a genuine compliment?

Conclusion

Here’s our follow-up regarding making compliments a requirement for post curation and rewards – it is not going to be one! However, I’m curious to know whether we should provide slightly higher curation for including compliments in a post. Your voice and opinion is very important and does matter, so I hope that you’ll participate in directing this community towards its best path. Thank you in advance for your participation!
