Hello hivians. How are you today? I hope you were able to get through the dreaded Monday. Today I wanted to write an article about something a little controversial and that ends up happening to every mother with small children. The children want a puppy.
In my humble opinion, giving a child a dog or adopting one is a bad idea. And I'm not saying this because it's typical that you'll end up taking care of him yourself. Of course it will be like that, at the end of the day you take care of the children. They can't take care of themselves let alone a pet. Not in my opinion it is a bad idea for deeper reasons. Specifically two main ones.
The first has nothing to do with the children but with the dog. A dog can survive like many other animals with very little, but to live he has some basic needs. He needs a pack of other dogs, at least 4 or 5 companions of different ages. We humans cannot be his pack. They also have physical needs. They should run at least 30 to 40 km daily.
If a dog does not have these minimum conditions, he is being mistreated no matter how much he wags his tail when he sees us arriving.
The second is the relationship with the children. Dogs operate in a hierarchy, they follow a leader. That means that our little ones will be the dog's leader, on the contrary it would be crazy. This sends the wrong message to children where they have the power to command another living being although they are not capable of taking care of themselves. This can lead to creating an authoritarian or spoiled adult who believes they are always right or in power.
