Hi everyone! It's time for the weekly Battle Mage Secrets challenge and the challenge this week is the Fire & Regret Ruleset. I posted a battle with the right ruleset this time.
About the Ruleset
Fire & Regret
The Fire & Regret ruleset states that "All Monsters have the Return Fire ability". This means that Ranged monsters will take half the damage that they mete out to the opponents, and it also means that the use of Ranged monsters should be avoid unless it serves a strategic interest.
Battle Ruleset(s)
Details of my battle with this ruleset is as follows.
Even Stevens: Only Monsters with even Mana costs may be used in battles
Only the Life and Dragon Splinters can be used
Mana Cap: 45
Format: Modern
Cards & Line Up
Summoner
Summoner: Quix the Devious - This reduces the the Ranged Attack of all the opponents ranged monsters by 1 and the Speed of all the opponent's monsters by 1.
Position | Name | Description |
---|---|---|
1 | Djinn Chwala | It is a melee monster with a good amount of health and shield, and has the Thorns ability, which will reflect melee damage in addition to the range damage reflection from this ruleset. |
2 | Corsair Bosun | It has a decent amount of health and shield too and has the Reach and Reflection Shield ability too. It's damage is rather high which helps in the battle |
3 | Time Mage | It has the Slow ability and is here to slow the opponent even further, on top of that contributed by my summoner. |
4 | Chaos Dragon | It is a magic monster and has the Flying and Scattershot ability, and will hopefully randomly take out some of the opponents monsters fast |
5 | Dhampir Infiltrator | It's lost cost, low health and low attack but has the Double Strike ability. It'll be useful to deal some damage to the opponents backline. |
6 | Soul Fiend | I was down to 1 point left at this point and this was the only card available to provide some initial protection to the backline, given the Even Stevens ruleset. |
Strategy
The combination of rulesets here meant:
- Ranged monsters are at a disadvantage
- Only monsters with even mana cost are available for usage
Given these 2 combinations, a good strategy would be to use the Dragon Splinter if possible, as it'll extend the number of cards that can be used. I would also use melee and magic monsters as far as possible to mitigate the effects of the reflected range damage. So my strategy here was to slow the opponent down as much as possible, so that I have the advantage of attacking first, and I stuck to the combination of melee and magic monsters.
I would use monsters with the Martyr ability too if it was possible. Unfortunately, I haven't seen one with even mana cost that can be used in this ruleset.
The opponent seem clueless about the ruleset (or it could be a bot), and half his deck consisted of ranged monsters. As a result of that, it made this battle a breeze as monsters like Pelacor Arbalest killed off itself with the reflected damage.
Thoughts on the Fire & Regret Ruleset
The Fire & Regret ruleset is a fairly simple ruleset, where you avoid the use of Ranged monsters. However, one exception to this is the use of Ranged monsters with the Martyr ability, as you want them to die off to improve the stats of the adjacent monster. If you stack it with a monster with the Resurrect ability, it'll give the adjacent monsters an even bigger stats boost! Also, if you have summoners with the Amplify ability, the opponent will take an even larger reflected damage.
