Aprovecho este espacio en Holos&Lotus para resaltar una fecha que recién pasó y es el Día Internacional del Síndrome de Asperger, que se celebró el 18 de febrero. Este día sirve para la concienciación sobre el autismo, por eso vamos juntos a pensar durante unos días, lo que implica la vida autista, la cual puede estar en muchos escenarios agradeciendo por ser notada y valorada, pero también puede estar esperando atención, incluso en el núcleo familiar. Es así, como llega la primera iniciativa sobre Autismo en la comunidad diseñada para el desarrollo integral del ser humano.

La fecha especial que traigo a colación, en esta edición de la Columna AUTISMO: Mundo Azul, es en honor a Hans Asperger médico austriaco quien se interesó en el estudio de características autistas en niños y se dedicó, en el siglo pasado, al estudio del autismo haciendo importantes aportes científicos aunque su reputación está bajo la sombra del nazismo en la segunda guerra mundial. Pero a pesar de algunos aspectos oscuros, en apariencia, en la vida de Hans Asperger, aprovecho esta fecha al igual que muchas organizaciones para expresar un mensaje de reflexión sobre el autismo.

Quiero acotar que cuando conocí el mundo del autismo en el año 1999, a través del diagnóstico de mi hijo mayor, hablar de Asperger era hacerlo de un síndrome aparte del autismo, aunque era vinculado al espectro. Recuerdo que las dudas eran mayores a las que existen hoy en día, en medio de una aparente comprensión. Los especialistas daban sus explicaciones pero realmente las ideas seguían y siguen flotando aún.

¿Síndrome Asperger o Autismo?

Bien, tras muchos debates por parte de especialistas y organismos internacionales se llega a la conclusión en el año 2011 con repercusión en el 2013, que el Síndrome de Asperger entra la categoría del Espectro Autista y afirmándose que es el mismo autismo leve. Una vez vinculados no ha sido tan sencillo la consideración científica por parte de la sociedad, pues se sigue llamando por separados a los aspergers y a los autistas.

Sin embargo, es importante adentrase en las consideraciones que da la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) sobre este aspecto, pues ya el Síndrome Asperger no existe como diagnóstico. Por otro lado, en las últimas décadas, es común oír que el asperger está siendo diagnosticado con más frecuencia en la actualidad e incluso en adultos, cuando en realidad se trata de las características propias del Trastorno del Espectro Autista en su Nivel Leve.

Características del autismo leve:

Estas son características que se pueden observar en el autismo nivel o grado uno. Aunque hay algunas que están presentes en todos los niveles de autismo, existen unas que pueden determinar la presencia de autismo leve, pues las destrezas y también las oportunidades de desarrollo son evidentes, a pesar de limitaciones para el desenvolvimiento social.

1. Demuestran mayores habilidades comunicativas.

2. Dificultades para relacionarse (interacción) con los demás.

3. Destrezas cognitivas (muchas veces sobresaliente).

4. Movimientos estereotipados o manierismos.

5. Intereses y capacidad de concentración poco común.

6. Dificultad para mantener el contacto visual.

Independientemente de que se cumpla al pie de la letra tal o cual característica hay que tomar en cuenta que los niños con autismo leve pueden alcanzar una vida independiente, tienen capacidad cognitiva para cumplir con responsabilidades académicas hasta alcanzar un nivel universitario, pero que quede claro, que aunque vean sonrisas en ellos la procesión va por dentro. Es común que se auto condicionen ellos mismos para tratar de encajar en el grupo que les rodea mientras van creciendo gracias a la maduración.

La falta de habilidades sociales los hace sentir peor o mejor, dependiendo de cada caso porque en su vida aislada sienten que mientras más solos es mejor. No saben de manipulación, esto lo digo porque muchas veces son juzgados como malcriados que quieren llamar la atención. Recuerden que son ingenuos lo que los convierte en víctimas de malas bromas y de perversos juicios.

I take this space in Holos&Lotus to highlight a date that just passed and it is the International Asperger Syndrome Day, which was celebrated on February 18. This day serves to raise awareness about autism, so let's think together for a few days, what autistic life implies, which may be in many scenarios thanking for being noticed and valued, but may also be waiting for attention, even in the family nucleus. This is how the first initiative on Autism in the community designed for the integral development of the human being arrives.

The special date that I bring up, in this edition of the AUTISM: Blue World Column, is in honor of Hans Asperger, an Austrian doctor who was interested in the study of autistic characteristics in children and dedicated himself, in the last century, to the study of autism making important scientific contributions although his reputation is under the shadow of Nazism in the Second World War. But in spite of some apparently dark aspects of Hans Asperger's life, I take advantage of this date, as many organizations do, to express a message of reflection on autism.

I want to point out that when I first learned about the world of autism in 1999, through my oldest son's diagnosis, to speak of Asperger's was to speak of a syndrome separate from autism, although it was linked to the spectrum. I remember that the doubts were greater than those that exist today, in the midst of an apparent understanding. Specialists were giving their explanations but really the ideas were and still are floating around.

Asperger's Syndrome or Autism?

Well, after many debates on the part of specialists and international organizations, the conclusion was reached in 2011, with repercussions in 2013, that Asperger's Syndrome falls into the category of Autism Spectrum and it is affirmed that it is the same as mild autism. Once linked, the scientific consideration by society has not been so simple, since aspergers and autistic people are still called separately.

However, it is important to go into the considerations given by the World Health Organization (WHO) on this aspect, since Asperger Syndrome does not exist as a diagnosis. On the other hand, in the last decades, it is common to hear that Asperger's is being diagnosed more frequently nowadays and even in adults, when in fact it is the characteristics of Mild Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Characteristics of mild autism:

These are characteristics that can be observed in autism level or grade one, although there are general in all levels of autism there are some that can determine the presence of mild autism, since the skills and also the opportunities for development are evident, despite some limitations for social development.

1. Demonstrate greater communication skills.

2. Difficulties in relating (interacting) with others.

3. Cognitive skills (often outstanding).

4. Stereotyped movements or mannerisms.

5. Unusual interests and ability to concentrate.

6. Difficulty maintaining eye contact.

Regardless of whether this or that characteristic is fulfilled to the letter, it must be taken into account that children with mild autism can achieve an independent life, they have the cognitive capacity to fulfill academic responsibilities up to university level, but let it be clear, that although they see smiles on them, the procession goes inside. It is common for them to self-condition themselves to try to fit in with the group around them as they grow through maturation.

The lack of social skills makes them feel worse or better, depending on each case because in their isolated life they feel that the more alone the better. They do not know how to manipulate, I say this because they are often judged as spoiled brats who want to get attention. Remember that they are naive which makes them victims of bad jokes and perverse judgments.

I always like to call for reflection, so I invite you to take some time to think about the times you have interacted with an asperger or mild autistic child, in your family, at work, at college, in the neighborhood where you live or here at Hive, or another possibility is that you yourself have the condition. Surely you have anecdotes that have made you grow or frustrated, so share some concerns and also ideas of what can be done to make an autistic person feel accepted and included and the benefits or detriments, if any, that their company brings you.
