From time to time I visit the ground squirrels in Lower Austria and I also did it this year in the summer when I was on the journey to vienna and made a short stop by at the place where these ground squirrels live. It is always a pleasure watching them and during the later summer it is easier to get some closeup pictures since they come really close to you and sometimes even get as close so you could nearly take them with your hand. The squirrels are cute and a very nice photography subject. In late summer they even had some small ground squirrels that where enjoying the warm sun out on the meaddow.

In the morning when the sun starts getting warmer they come out of their earth caves and look for food in the low grass and of course also enjoy the warm sun heating up their fur. Since they are usually very shy animals but not on this spot that I know, it is pretty easy to get very close to them and take some nice pictures, especially when you have some time and wait for them to approach you when lying in the grass. Some people try to lure them close to them with some food like apples or other things they bring. I don't like this very much since I prefer them eating food they can find on their own. But when I started taking pictures of them I also broght some seeds to lure them. But since they come close anyway and you don't even need some bait I stopped feeding them. Most important thing is anyway the patience, they are curious anyway and come close on their own at least on this spot.
I have already seen some ground squirrels on other spots that are completely shy and hide in their earth caves as soon as they see a human.
