2010: The Year We Make Contact is a 1984 science fiction film directed by Peter Hyams and starring Roy Scheider, John Lithgow, Helen Mirren, Bob Balaban, and Keir Dullea. The film is a sequel to Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey, and it is based on the novel 2010: Odyssey Two by Arthur C. Clarke.
The film is set nine years after the events of 2001. A joint American-Soviet mission is sent to Jupiter to investigate what happened to the Discovery One spacecraft, which disappeared on a mission to the planet in 2001. The crew of the Leonov spacecraft discovers that the Discovery has been reactivated by a mysterious black monolith that was found on the Moon in 2001.
The crew of the Leonov soon learns that the monolith is emitting a powerful signal that is causing strange and dangerous events to occur on Jupiter and its moons. They must race against time to stop the monolith from destroying the solar system.
