Exploring The World's First Art Mall — K11 — A Muse By The Sea

August 4, 2023

Located at the heart of Victoria Dockside in Tsim Sha Tsui Hong Kong, is the world's first Art mall, K11, inspired by a Muse by the Sea. It is undoubtedly the most visited mall when looking for a great experience in dining, shopping, art, culture, and relaxation. This isn't just an ordinary mall; there are a lot of interesting things to do and see. Art lovers would definitely love this place!

Perhaps, you have seen its atrium with world-class architecture in my recent post about it. The atrium would make you feel that you are under the sea by looking at those brassy waves, the blue luminous glass sheets, and the white pearl ceiling designs.

Doesn't it look like a whirlpool? Meanwhile, those round white lights are like pearls.

Unique brassy chandelier.

The founder of K11 collaborated with hundreds of architects, designers, and artists to create a world-class Art Mall combining art, nature, and culture. Each floor has unique designs that suit people's love of nature, art, and culture. And Retail shops are organized creatively to match the architecture and designs.

Art Pieces In The Mall

This wouldn't be called Art Mall without pieces of artwork. There are carefully curated art collections on all levels of the mall that are chosen by different artists. At the entrance facing the dockside are art pieces by a British artist, Phyllida Barlow's entitled, Folly; Baubles. These are made from cardboard, cement, foam, paper, plywood, polycotton, polystyrene, paint spray, steel, varnish, and wire mesh. Those pieces resemble floating asteroids in the galaxy.

Meanwhile, an American artist, Sterling Ruby has two artworks displayed near the other entrance and on the higher floor entitled, CDCR and Drag On respectively. Those cannot be touched, but I was so curious that I touched one of them when no one was watching, lol. Both artworks have a common material, urethane, and depict stalagmite formations.

I have shared here before an amazing masterpiece by a Canadian sculptor, David Altmejd entitled, The Eve made from organic materials and resembling a corpse. This was suspended upside down inside a glass chamber, and I just inverted this photo to put it upright.

Another amazing sculpture displayed in this mall is by a late American conceptual artist John Baldessari Beethoven's trumpet (with ear), a giant fiberglass ear and a bronze trumpet. This is Opus 127 and one of his sculptures in his very first sculptural project. There is a melody that plays when someone speaks into the trumpet hole.

Just near this sculpture is a giant new media contemporary art piece by Tony Oursler called EUC%. The artist shows in his artwork the relationship between computers and cyberspace and the negative impact of technology on humans.

Inside the glass ball in the atrium is the exhibition of Nanna Ditzel also known as the queen of Danish designs. The items on display are some of her furniture designs.

While exploring the hall near a garden, I stumbled upon an artwork at the corner by another Danish artist, Alexander Tovborg called Europha. His artwork combines different patterns, forms, and imagery.

I spotted some paintings on panels on different floors by different artists. This one below, for instance, is charcoal on a paper art piece by Anna Park called But Don't Touch which portrays the self-aware human condition.

These are cute, aren't they?

Some paintings are displayed outside restaurants.

Different sculptures are also part of the attractions.

Trendy Shopping and Arty Dining

People come to this place for trendy shopping and arty dining experiences. There are several international dining shops to choose from that offer cuisines with authentic and innovative flavors. Food lovers looking for new culinary flavors must add K11 to their bucket lists. This has been the top food hub in TST. The comfy and arty atmospheres of each shop create an Instagrammable backdrop that people truly love visiting.

Aside from arty dining, the mall has been a house of hundreds of trendy shops with high-quality International brands. This allows customers to have a unique shopping experience with a lot of choices that suit their preferences. Just like the arty dining shops, retail shops are creatively designed to make the shopping experience even more worthwhile. From merchandise, apparel, and homeware, to fashioned items, accessories, equipment, and others, all can be found in this mall.

This shop above looks cool, isn't it? Items on display are unique and high-quality souvenir and gift items, accessories, gadgets, tools, and other sci-fi-inspired displays

Playground

Aside from shops, the mall also has playgrounds for kids where adults can rest, or play with their kids. The Peacock Playground is another attraction at Bohemian Roof Garden which also serve as a pet garden. So both kids and pets have respective spots to play in this garden.

Near the other entrance is Legoland which I shared in my #MarketFriday post before. The main attraction is the giant statue of Donut near Donut playground, which kids can also enjoy.

There are more art exhibition rooms in this mall, but those require a fee to enter. So if you are looking for a unique mall experience in Hong Kong, do visit K11 along Victoria Dockside in Tsim Sha Tsui. You will definitely love the place!

And I bet @dswigle would love to shop here too for the #MarketFriday.

Thanks for stopping by.
