Understanding Breast Cancer and Self-Care//LOH #208

Greetings great ladies of the Hive, it has been a while I took part in this contest and I am glad to share my thoughts in the #208 edition of the Ladies of Hive Contest.

It might sound funny if I say that I did not really understand what a pink month really is not until I had to look it up and I finally learnt that a Pink month is a month set aside to globally create awareness and support individuals affected with breast cancer, and I am glad I learnt something new today.

Breast cancer is one the global diseases that posses threat to the lives of our women all round the world, it originates from the tissues of the breast. And cancer is referred to as an abnormal growth that occurs in the cells of the body, hence breast cancer is an abnormal growth that occurs and multiply in the cells of the breast.

However, I barely hear that men do have breast cancer but most cases the primary victims are the women. Have you ever asked why it happens mostly to women and very few cases in men? well, both male and female are all mammals and therefore possess the mammary gland but why breast cancer is primarily affecting women is because of the following reasons:

1.Men's breasts have less glandular and lobular tissue.
2.Men have lower levels of estrogen and progesterone hormones that stimulate breast cell growth.
3.Men have a primary hormone called testosterone which inhibits breast growth.

Whereas Women have:

  1. women have a more glandular and lobular tissue
  2. women have higher levels of estrogen and progesterone hormones that stimulates breast cell growth.
  3. they have Progesterone as a primary hormone which helps in the development of the breast.
So these are the few reasons why women are more likely prone to breast cancer than men, but that does not mean that men can not have breast cancer, obviously men have breast too and are less susceptible to breast cancer.

This pink month is not just a reminder to us that breast cancer is real neither is it just an awareness, it is a call to action, it is a gentle reminder of how important we out to prioritize our breast health and self care so as to avoid the harsh realities of breast cancer.

Self care is not just a luxury, it is of outmost necessity that we ought to practice self care everyday not only for the pink month but as a routine in our every day activities.

some of these self care practices include:
1.Engaging in regular exercise, it is really profitable for the overall health of man.
2.Eating Balanced diet, avoid eating junks as it affects our health and makes us more susceptible to having breast cancer.
3.An Apple A day keeps the doctor away, always remember these, take fruits as often as possible to keep breast cancer away.
4.Maintain good sleeping hygiene, do not starve your body of sleep, it is very important for you health.
5.Do not over work yourself, reduce the level of stressful activities you do. Your body just like a machine can break down if used over and over, so to avoid break down, do not over stress yourself, have some good and quality time for yourselves.
6.And lastly, always remember to go for your medical check up as often as possible.

This Pink Month, I urge everyone to make self-care a non-negotiable part of your daily routine, lets help and support one another together we can create a world where breast cancer is no longer a life-threatening disease.
