I ate so much in Hawaii!

I normally eat ample amounts, and even a lot more while on vacation.

Garlic Shrimps from Hatsuhana Japanese Restaurant at Kaila Road

and Garlic Shrimps from the Shrimp Truck.

It’s buttery, garlicky, and shrimpy !
And everybody loves them.

... by the ocean in North Shore.

Garlic Shrimps is made very popular by the food trucks that is found all over the coastline of North Shore of Oahu. Giovannis, Fumi’s, and Romy’s are some of the best!

Malasadas

Malasadas are the Portuguese version of a donut. They are deep-fried, and dusted in sugar. Some are filled with sweet-flavored custard. These tasty treats were brought to Hawaii from Portugal in the 1800s.

Leonard’s Bakery makes the best malasadas in the whole of Hawaii. Leonard Rego opened Leonard’s Bakery on Oahu in 1953 and made them available to the masses. It is still open to this day in Honolulu.

Kalua Pork

There are many (modern) ways of preparing Kalua Pork. But this Kalua pork was prepared in the early Hawaiian cooking traditions using the 'umu or Earth Oven. The whole pig is cooked for long hours over and under hot rocks.

Of course you have to do a Ka Moana Lu'au when in Hawaii. I had one at the Sea Life Park. My plate is comprised Kalua pork, Lomi Lomi salmon, fresh catch with a tropical mango, pineapple, and papaya salsa and poi (in the plastic container). It was a buffet-dinner show.

And so much more!

The cost of food in Hawaii is quite high. Expect to pay double or more for the cost of food you would pay in mainland USA. It is the law of supply and demand. Hawaii can’t supply enough food to cover requirements of residents and visitors alike with what it produces from the land. A good amount of the food need to be transported into the state. And there are lots of costs involved with bringing goods into Hawaii.
