Para nadie es un secreto que existe una gran ausencia de referentes femeninos en el mundo de la ciencia, pero lo que muchos pasan por alto es la importancia de tener modelos femeninos que nos sirvan de inspiración para así elegir una carrera relacionada con la ciencia y la tecnología...quizás es por eso que el porcentaje de mujeres que se dedican a estas áreas del saber es tan bajo, prefiriendo entonces carreras en donde se puedan sentir, de cierta forma, no tan renegadas.

Fueron muchas las mujeres que en siglos pasaron tuvieron que firmar sus trabajos de investigación con algún nombre masculino o simplemente publicar su obra bajo anonimato, precisamente para que su trabajo fuese valorado y no pasado por alto por haber sido realizado por una mujer, pero pese a todas estas dificultades impuestas por la misma sociedad de la época, a lo largo de la historia han existido muchas mujeres que lograron sobresalir en este mundo donde su papel siempre fue menospreciado, dejando así un legado muy importante que cambiaría la forma de ver el mundo. Muchas de ellas no fueron reconocidas en vida, sino hasta muchos años después de fallecer es que su trabajo fue realmente apreciado y su nombre valorado.

It is no secret that there is a great absence of female role models in the world of science, but what many overlook is the importance of having female role models to inspire us to choose a career related to science and technology... perhaps that is why the percentage of women who are dedicated to these areas of knowledge is so low, preferring careers where they can feel, in a way, not so renegade.

There were many women who in past centuries had to sign their research work with a male name or simply publish their work anonymously, precisely so that their work would be valued and not overlooked for having been done by a woman, but despite all these difficulties imposed by the same society of the time, throughout history there have been many women who managed to excel in this world where their role was always underestimated, thus leaving a very important legacy that would change the way we see the world. Many of them were not recognized during their lifetime, it was not until many years after their death that their work was truly appreciated and their name valued.

En las escuelas mucho se habla sobre Einstein, Faraday, Schrödinger, y muchos otros científicos que sí, en efecto, fueron unas mentes brillantes y lograron realizar descubrimientos increíbles, pero ¿qué hay de aquellas mujeres que hicieron también grandes aportes?,¿por qué casi no se habla de ellas? Marie Curie, Rosalind Franklin, Ada Yonath, Margaret Hamilton, Lisa Meitner, Margarita Salas, Sophie Germain, Emmy Noether...¿acaso recuerdas haber escuchado alguno de estos nombres en tus clases de ciencias en el colegio o simplemente en algún programa de televisión? Estoy segura de que de todos estos nombres, solo habrás escuchado como mínimo dos, pero ahora que estás leyendo esto, te invito a que te tomes un minuto de tu tiempo para indagar acerca de ellas y así te sientas sumamente orgullosa del papel que una mujer puede llegar a desempeñar en un área tan "difícil" y en la que se tenia la falsa idea de que solo los hombres eran los únicos que podían participar.

Hoy más que nunca me siento orgullosa de haber escogido una carrera científica y de ser parte de ese pequeño porcentaje de mujeres que se dedican a esta área del saber. Un porcentaje que espero que aumente con el tiempo y así, de esta manera, sean muchas mujeres las que comprendan que no son menos inteligentes que los hombres y que sí tienen la capacidad para dedicarse a la ciencia y tecnología y llegar a ser exitosas. Si bien es cierto que en los últimos años se han logrado derribar un poco los estereotipos de género que vinculan a la ciencia con la masculinidad, también es cierto que aun nos queda demasiado camino por recorrer pues las desigualdades de género siguen estando muy latentes en el mundo actual y en el ámbito científico en particular.

In schools we talk a lot about Einstein, Faraday, Schrödinger, and many other scientists who, yes, indeed, were brilliant minds and made incredible discoveries, but what about those women who also made great contributions, why do we hardly talk about them? Marie Curie, Rosalind Franklin, Ada Yonath, Margaret Hamilton, Lisa Meitner, Margarita Salas, Sophie Germain, Emmy Noether...do you remember hearing any of these names in your science classes at school or simply on a television program? I am sure that of all these names, you have only heard at least two, but now that you are reading this, I invite you to take a minute of your time to investigate about them and feel extremely proud of the role that a woman can play in such a "difficult" area and in which there was a false idea that only men were the only ones who could participate.

Today more than ever I feel proud to have chosen a scientific career and to be part of that small percentage of women who are dedicated to this area of knowledge. I hope that this percentage will increase over time and that, in this way, many women will realize that they are no less intelligent than men and that they do have the ability to dedicate themselves to science and technology and become successful. While it is true that in recent years we have managed to break down the gender stereotypes that link science with masculinity, it is also true that we still have a long way to go because gender inequalities are still very latent in today's world and in the scientific field in particular.
