Greetings, friends of Ladies of Hive.
It's very common to hear teenagers say: I'm not doing this anymore; I'm not eating this anymore...; or never again... whatever. It's very easy, not only for them, but for everyone, to say similar things in moments when we're overcome by emotion. The difficult part is living with the consequences.
As a writer, I've learned this firsthand and throughout my career. Sometimes, when we're overwhelmed by emotion, it's difficult for us to think with perspective and clarity. In fact, sometimes we don't even think; we just react.
On stage, if we forget our lines or make a mistake, panic or instant frustration can lead us to abruptly pause, frantically speed up to "finish quickly," or even mentally abandon the performance.
That's a reaction, not a decision.
While this is more common with negative emotions like anger, we also experience it when we're overwhelmed by passion, such as when we fall in love.
Both emotions prevent us from seeing the bigger picture. In music, passion for a song can make you want to sing it at an impossible tempo, or add excessive embellishments that ruin it.
I've seen this in literature as well, when an author likes one or more narrative techniques and uses them too much, not realizing that it's neither effective nor correct. Everything seems either impossible and bad, or perfect and ideal. Emotions tend to magnify all circumstances, eliminating nuance.
A decision made under the influence of disproportionate emotion is usually also disproportionate. I've seen colleagues, after harsh criticism, decide to abandon literature altogether. They gave up something they had mastered, or abruptly changed their style out of spite. It's an exaggerated response to a momentary stimulus.
The worst part is that when the initial shock subsides and we can clearly see what we did, and especially the consequences of our actions, that's when we ask ourselves: how could we have done such a thing?
Some have had to rebuild professional relationships because of impulsive email responses, or regain the trust of an acquaintance after an angry outburst at an event.
So, the right thing to do would be to acknowledge our mistake and apologize. We would go through the uncomfortable moment of having to own up to our errors and start over doing things right.
It's humiliating, but it's the only way to repair the damage of a permanent decision made in a temporary state of mind.
It's almost impossible for teenagers to learn to control their emotions. However, we adults can achieve the calm and inner peace we need to make decisions with a cool head and not react impulsively.
My technique is the pause: I slam on the brakes. When faced with a strong emotion, I set a deadline: I don't decide anything until I've slept a night, or until I've taken a long walk.
Then I let the chemistry of the emotion dissipate. Only then, with a clear mind, do I evaluate whether the decision my anger or euphoria suggested still makes sense.
Almost always, the answer is no. The emotion passes. The decision, often, remains. Choose what you want to live with.
Saludos, amigas de Ladies of Hive.
