I don't know who said beauty doesn't have a "functional purpose" but I disagree. For sure many of us have read/heard the old saying, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". It doesn't matter if you are an artist or not, something that is beautiful to you will make you want to have it no matter what. Otherwise we will admire it from afar and we can smile or feel happy and inspired just by seeing it. How can it be useless if that's the effect on people?

A quick check online and I find that it is an inquiry also posted on Quora, reddit and other sites. I mean, seriously I've never thought there are people who think this way. It's like saying, "Art has no function." Really? As an artist that is insulting. Entertainers and even plant lovers will go up in arms at such words. Actually many people will feel slighted by such a statement.
Think about all the flowers, cats, your children if you have any (!!!), clothes, paintings, food, TV shows & movies, furniture, houses, wallpapers and even sculpted things you see or own. How can we say beauty has no functional purpose when it is in everything? Such a thought is incredulous. š
Okay okay, yes, let's calm down a bit. No I will not explain why beauty has a purpose. It's self explanatory. Just look at the world and how wonderful it is! How it makes everyone feel and think and live!

Only blind people should say beauty has "no functional purpose". Then again even they can hear beauty in the melody of songs! Why then can't beauty have a functional purpose? Goodness gracious. š¤¦āāļø
If you look at things sexually yeah sure more people can say beauty has a function thus it becomes highly valuable. Remove that kind of thought and what do you get? Beauty will still be highly valued because it has a purpose for everyone. It doesn't matter if it is in physical form or not. Beauty is one of the things that makes our life worth living.
What you find beautiful may not be what your friend, cousin or a stranger in another country does. Still you will gladly pay a hefty amount for something wonderful to your senses, right?
We don't even need to think about models or celebrities just to imagine why they are highly paid for being pleasing to the eyes. If beauty is absent then our life would be dull and boring. Omg. No fun, no joy, no nothing. We'd be zombies if everything is ugly. Even the forests and such would be swampy and lifeless.

But then surely even zombies would have their own sense of beauty, right? The least ugly will always be the most beautiful. So then there will still be beauty in a decrepit or disgusting world. For sure if they still use money then they would go crazy just to pay a lot for that.
Beauty can even be priceless too! Only capitalists and materialistic people will make you envy luxury items. You can never put a price on something personal. Like, someone will make a beautiful personalized gift to show appreciation to their helpful colleague. Overreaching? Well how about this. A child will draw for the parents and they will see it as lovely no matter how it looks.
I could go on and on you know. Why I can even add that only heartless people will use beauty to hurt others. Yeah that's getting off topic but you should get the picture why beauty can be worth quite a lot or also be priceless.
