Most people don't know this, but it wasn't until after World War II and the bombing of Pearl Harbor (which sealed our involvement in the war) that Hawaii and the surrounding Polynesian islands were admitted to the United States. We just had a military base there. On this day in 1959, former president Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a proclamation of annexation which also included the call to issue a new 50 starred US flag. Did you also know that the tallest mountain in the world is actually a volcano and is in Hawaii?
