Thriving in Summer: Growing a Garden in the Desert

Blooms! Blooms! Blooms!

Guess what?! Finally, after two months(ish?!!) our mung plants are finally growing some blossoms. The @divinekids planted these mung plants a couple of months ago and were amused at just how they quickly grew from seeds to tiny sprouts.

They grew so fast, but at one point I think they stopped, or the growth isn't really that obvious when they reach a particular height. Below is a photo of them from last week, 13th of June.

Maybe due to the extreme heat, our cat, Kulet recently is finding comfort in lying on our plant beds. Why not, the soil is frequently watered and shaded, so it must be cool! This afternoon, I found her lying on the pot where we planted the mung plants. Kuleeetttt!!!!

A stem got broken but @kennyroy tried to graft it. Let's see the magic of his green thumb a few days from now.

Grafting and Blossoms

Speaking of grafting, @kennyroy has planted some watermelons. He has two plants which are thriving very nicely in their spot. One is a regular plant, and the other one, he grafted - - 2 plants into one.

One is has also started to show some blossoms, and a tiny fruit, we think!

Hard work

Growing a garden, as it is, is already a great task. It also requires a lot of hard work and knowledge. What plants are suited in what environment, what kind of soil, how much water, etc.

All the more, gardening in a desert country like the UAE is also very challenging. We don't have the technology big and commercial gardens here have. Having good soil is also a challenge, as you would imagine hence, we started composting our food wastes too. Should I mention watering these plants 2x a day? By the way, did you know that UAE started growing its own rice? They are even planning to grow coffee and wheat! That's thanks to their many sustainability and innovative projects.

Well, all credits to @kennyroy for all the hard work. As I said in one of my earlier gardening posts, I take pleasure only in the harvesting and cooking. 😅
