The Summer Releases And Dune

Among all the chaos and mayhem caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the fate of the summer blockbuster movie releases seems insignificant. Well, not all news has to be significant and since I'm still a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe films and eagerly awaiting the release of Dune in December, I'll make this short post about that.

The biggest problem with Hollywood movies these past decades is rooted, like most of our problems, in capitalism; film studios and producers only invest in save products, in titles that all but guarantee a decent turnover at the box office, which is why the Hollywood movie landscape is defined by an endless slew of sequels, remakes and reboots. There's no room in Hollywood for originality or art, only for what sells. That is, unless you're a particularly well respected and influential director. This is why Stanley Kubrick got to make 2001: A Space Odyssey, and why Alejandro Jodorowsky didn't get a chance to make his version of Dune. Well... okay, there were more reasons why Jodorowsky's Dune never got made, like the script being for a 12 - 14 hour movie, which he refused to cut down; Jodorwowsky's Dune is still known as "the best science fiction movie never made", and it's kind of tragic that we eventually ended up with another artist on the big screen, David Lynch making the Dune movie, which was a big flop at the box office.

It's remarkable and uplifting that the production on the new Dune movie got a green light, for the reasons stated above. And even more encouraging is the fact that Denis Villeneuve was chosen to direct it, as he has made one of the most original science fiction movies of recent decades with Arrival in 2017. And sure, Villeneuve also made one sequel, but that was Blade Runner 2049 in 2017, and the original Blade Runner with Harrison Ford and Rutger Hauer, who unfortunately passed away last year here in the Netherlands, was a piece of art; making a sequel to that movie and being able to live up to all the hype behind that, was no mean feat to pull off.

With the Corona virus still wreaking havoc to all parts of daily life, and the movie producers aware that no one will be interested in, or even allowed to visit theaters, a lot of big titles have been pushed backward on the release calendar, Disney's life action remake of "Mulan", Marvel's "Black Widow", the new James Bond movie "No Time To Die" and "Wonder Woman 1984" among them; basically all blockbusters slated for a summer release have been pushed back to the last quarter, in some cases even to next year. Here's a full list of all the coronavirus related delays: Coronavirus movie delays: New release dates for 2020 and 2021 blockbusters. In that list the release date for Dune, December 18, is unchanged still, but who knows how long this pandemic will last? There's no way to hurry nature, regardless of what may be good for the economy, so who knows? I hope though, I wish with all of my heart that it'll be over soon, and that we'll be able to all go see Dune this year.
