It's Here..!

No, no, nothing ominous this time. No, today I'm excited like a little kid in a candy store, for today saw the release of the official trailer for Denis Villeneuve's film adaptation of "Dune"!

And what a beautiful trailer it is. Okay, I know: even the most horrible wrecks of cinematic failures often have trailers that make the mouth water, so we should remain calm and wait for the finished product. But man... I can hardly wait to consume that finished product! If you've followed me for quite some time, you'll know how much of a fan I am of Frank Herbert's Dune novels, and I know I'm not alone because these books, alongside Isaac Asimov's Foundation series, are the most popular and respected science-fiction novels of all time. And the director Denis Villeneuve is responsible for two of the best science fiction films in recent years: Arrival and Blade Runner 2049. Those films were cinematic gems and especially Blade Runner 2049 was a sign that Villeneuve isn't afraid of taking on huge challenges; Ridley Scott's 1982 original Blade Runner with Harrison Ford and Rutger Hauer is loved by so many science-fiction lovers, that Villeneuve could easily become subject to their scorn if he put one foot wrong while filling those large shoes; but he didn't, and he wasn't, because Blade Runner 2049 captured the same unique cyberpunk atmosphere as the original without being an exact copy, and had an equally thought-provoking plot while being a true and believable sequel.

Still, a trailer is just a trailer... So here's another reason I'm so excited: the cast and crew is nothing short of epic. I'll now quote a rather large section of the text released by Warner Bros. Pictures alongside the trailer on YouTube, just to give you an idea why I'm rather confident that this adaptation of Dune has a good chance to be the best to date:

The film stars Oscar nominee Timothée Chalamet (“Call Me by Your Name,” “Little Women”), Rebecca Ferguson (“Stephen King’s Doctor Sleep,” “Mission: Impossible – Fallout”), Oscar Isaac (the “Star Wars” franchise) Oscar nominee Josh Brolin (“Milk,” “Avengers: Infinity War”), Stellan Skarsgård (HBO’s “Chernobyl,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron”), Dave Bautista (the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films, “Avengers: Endgame”), Stephen McKinley Henderson (“Fences,” “Lady Bird”), Zendaya (“Spider-Man: Homecoming,” HBO’s “Euphoria”), Chang Chen (“Mr. Long,” “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”), David Dastmalchian (“Blade Runner 2049,” “The Dark Knight”), Sharon Duncan-Brewster (“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” Netflix’s “Sex Education”), with Oscar nominee Charlotte Rampling (“45 Years,” “Assassin’s Creed”), with Jason Momoa (“Aquaman,” HBO’s “Game of Thrones”), and Oscar winner Javier Bardem (“No Country for Old Men,” “Skyfall”). [...] Behind the scenes, Villeneuve reteamed with two-time Oscar-nominated production designer Patrice Vermette (“Arrival,” “Sicario,” “The Young Victoria”), two-time Oscar-nominated editor Joe Walker (“Blade Runner 2049,” “Arrival,” “12 Years a Slave”), two-time Oscar-winning visual effects supervisor Paul Lambert (“First Man,” “Blade Runner 2049”), and Oscar-winning special effects supervisor Gerd Nefzer (“Blade Runner 2049”).

Add to all this the fact that Frank Herbert's son, Brian Herbert, who co-wrote with Kevin J. Anderson many prequels as well as the last two books in the sage as originally planned by his father, is among the executive producers of this film, and we've got a recipe for success. I'll stop here. Just watch the trailer and hope that the planned release date of 18 December this year will hold...
