Eating too much fruit leads to a fatty liver?

It's a common misconception that eating too much sugar (like fruits) can cause a fatty liver.

The thing is, most people rarely eat sugar on its own but often with lots of fat in form of chocolate cookies, strawberry ice-cream, chicken in BBQ sauce, toast with avocado, pasta with an oily pesto and so on. It's easy to think that sugar is the problem - yet the fat that comes along with it is the actual troublemaker.

Our liver is responsible from cleansing our blood and already has a mighty job to do considering that nowadays our body is often burdened with lots of toxins, pathogens, overuse of antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals, pesticides etc. What makes this task even more difficult is a high fat content in our blood. The blood then becomes thicker and carries less oxygen which not only makes cleansing the blood more challenging but also results in less hydration for our liver in order to function at its full potential.

On top, when we consume high-fat meals, our liver needs to greatly increase its bile production to allow a proper processing of the fats. If this happens on a regular basis, our liver becomes weaker and can't properly take care of its tasks anymore. It starts to take on those fats - a fatty liver starts to develop.

So, are fruits problematic for our liver?

Quite the contrary. It's actually one of those foods that help our liver to recover, providing vital glucose as fuel for its healing processes. Along with lowering our fat content and incorporating more leafy greens, herbs and veggies, as well as other healthy lifestyle practices - our liver gets a chance to break down stored fats and regenerate.
