The Brownie Special Six-16

Welcome to my old, beat up Brownie Special Six-16. If anyone is old enough to remember the old Disney movie The Black Hole, this camera reminds me of Bob; old and beat up, yet seemingly indestructible and still working.

According to the Art Deco Camera site, this camera was manufactured between 1938 and 1942, which definitely qualifies it for old. It takes a medium format 616 film which is larger than the 120 that I have. I do, however, have spindle adapters that will let me fit the 120 film into the 616 slot.

My 120 film, of course, was expired, so these pictures developed into something interesting indeed.

This is a picture of an old bridge that crosses a nearby creek into the next community by the school. This camera has no feature to control shutter speed - it's strictly point and click - so parts are dark while parts are bright due to the nature of the film and camera. It's difficult to see the bridge in this picture; it's on the middle right, right behind the snow covered logs.

This camera has two focal distances: 6-15 feet, and beyond 15 feet. It's very precise. It let me capture this shot with the chain link fence in the foreground and the bridge in the background.

Using an adapter to fit a smaller sized film into a larger camera leads to interesting effects such as this next; the film does not advance to perfectly fit the frame for the next picture. Sometimes there is overlap, and sometimes there is a harsh break between images. And sometimes it leads to a little bit of both and some double exposure. Here we have a small bit of winter on the left, but old autumn in the middle.

I did have fun with these double exposures and I think they turned out fantastically. I do plan on using this camera again to do some more. These were all taken at the New Castle, Delaware riverfront.
