El pasado mes de agosto se cumplieron 100 años del nacimiento del artista plástico cinético venezolano Carlos Cruz-Diez, por ese motivo este año se estarán realizando diversas actividades y eventos con el apoyo de la fundación Carlos Cruz-Diez, encargada de preservar el legado de este artista de trascendencia internacional, quien a lo largo de su carrera exploró diversas formas de indagar sobre el color: Couleur Additive, Physichromie, Induction Chromatique, Chromointerférence, Transchromie, Chromosaturation, Chromoscope y Couleur à l’Espace.
¿Sabes qué es el arte cinético?
El maestro Carlos Cruz-Diez es uno de los artistas fundamentales en esta corriente artística que surgió en París a mediados del siglo XX. Las obras de este movimiento se caracterizan por su movimiento físico o virtual. Los móviles de Calder pertenecen al arte cinético, pero también los penetrables de Soto, que llevan al espectador a una experiencia inmersiva, en tanto requieren la intervención física del espectador, mientras que las obras de Le Parc integran la luz, natural o artificial como recurso para generar el movimiento; mientras que en las obras del maestro Cruz-Diez el juego óptico se obtiene a través del color. En cualquier caso, lo característico del arte cinético es que es un arte que no es estático, es siempre un arte en movimiento, que concibe la obra como una realidad transformable.
Visita a la exposición
El pasado fin de semana tuve la oportunidad de visitar una de las exposiciones de su obra que actualmente se exhiben en mi ciudad, Caracas, en la Galería de Arte Nacional, “Carlos Cruz-Diez El color en dos tiempos”, que fue la ciudad donde nació el maestro el 17 de agosto de 1923. En el Museo de la Estampa y el Diseño Carlos Cruz-Diez, se encuentran abiertas otras dos exposiciones donde el público podrá disfrutar de las obras de este artista homenajeado. A partir de 1960 el artista se residenció en la ciudad de París, donde falleció el 27 de julio de 2019, pero se mantuvo vinculado a su país natal.
En las amplias salas del museo pueden verse obras de las distintas etapas de su trayectoria artística. En ellas el color ya no está vinculado a una forma de representar la realidad, no hay figuras, ni vivas ni inanimadas, las líneas y los colores generan en el espectador diversas sensaciones y emociones por sí mismas, como una forma de expresión plástica pura.
En la exposición “Carlos Cruz-Diez El color en dos tiempos” también puede observarse una muestra importante de su trabajo como diseñador gráfico, que fue otra faceta a través de la cual expresó su creatividad, diseñó libros, revistas, folletos, e incluso estuches como el que les comparto, para empacar botellas de vino.

Aunque en algunas de sus obras iniciales encontramos pinturas, de tendencia abstracta, una de las cosas más interesantes que podemos resaltar de su obra es la manera en que su trabajo genera una participación activa del espectador. Por una parte, cuando el espectador se mueve cambia la manera en que percibe la obra de Cruz-Diez. Por otra parte, algunas de las obras exhibidas se movían, cambiando la percepción que teníamos de ellas. En tres de estas obras, que eran tridimensionales y colgaban del techo, el espectador podía introducirse en ellas. La obra sale del lienzo y permite una interacción distinta con ella, replanteando los parámetros mismos del arte.
Hoy sus obras pueden observarse en distintas ciudades del mundo en América, Europa y Asia. Algunas de ellas se han integrado a espacios arquitectónicos. Te comparto una foto de una obra de Cruz-Diez en el Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern en Houston, Estados Unidos y un bello jardín que el maestro diseñó para la Universidad Simón Bolívar en Caracas.

Do you know what kinetic art is?
The master Carlos Cruz-Diez is one of the fundamental artists in this artistic movement that emerged in Paris in the mid-twentieth century. The works of this movement are characterized by their physical or virtual movement. Calder's mobiles belong to kinetic art, but so do Soto's penetrables, which take the viewer to an immersive experience, as they require the physical intervention of the viewer, while Le Parc's works integrate light, natural or artificial, as a resource to generate movement; while in the works of the master Cruz-Diez the optical game is obtained through color. In any case, the characteristic of kinetic art is that it is an art that is not static, it is always an art in movement, which conceives the work as a transformable reality.
Visit to the Exhibition
Last weekend I had the opportunity to visit one of the exhibitions of his work currently on display in my city, at Caracas, at the Galería de Arte Nacional, "Carlos Cruz-Diez El color en dos tiempos", which was the city where the master was born on August 17, 1923. In the Museo de la Estampa y el Diseño Carlos Cruz-Diez, two other exhibitions are open where the public can enjoy the works of this honored artist. Since 1960, the artist lived in Paris, where he died on July 27, 2019, but remained linked to his native country.
In the spacious rooms of the museum can be seen works from the different stages of his artistic career. In them color is no longer linked to a way of representing reality, there are no figures, neither alive nor inanimate, lines and colors generate in the viewer various sensations and emotions by themselves, as a form of pure plastic expression.
In the exhibition "Carlos Cruz-Diez Color in Two Times" you can also see an important sample of his work as a graphic designer, which was another facet through which he expressed his creativity, he designed books, magazines, brochures, and even cases like the one I share with you, for packaging bottles of wine.

Although in some of his early works we find paintings, with an abstract tendency, one of the most interesting things we can highlight about his work is the way in which his work generates an active participation of the viewer. On the one hand, when the viewer moves, it changes the way he or she perceives Cruz-Diez's work. On the other hand, some of the works exhibited moved, changing the perception we had of them. In three of these works, which were three-dimensional and hung from the ceiling, the viewer could enter them. The work leaves the canvas and allows a different interaction with it, rethinking the very parameters of art.
Today his works can be seen in different cities around the world in America, Europe and Asia. Some of them have been integrated into architectural spaces. I share with you a photo of a work by Cruz-Diez in the Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern in Houston, USA and a beautiful garden that the master designed for the Simón Bolívar University at Caracas.
